Engine cutting out immediately after startup - Any ideas?
Discussion
Now that the weather is very cold I have noticed that when I start the car from cold (vert cold) if I pull to the end of the driveway and engage the clutch and brake the revs drop completely to 0 and the car cuts out. It literally does this for the first 90 seconds when cold. As soon as the engine has warmed up even a little it is fine 1-2 mins driving)
I adjusted the idle speed so that it was at the right levels which helped a bit but my only real solution at the moment is to sit there for 2 mins idling at 1000rpm and then its fine. Not recommended by some
Is this a plugs issue? or something else?
Thanks in advance

You beat me to the very same question.I adjusted the idle speed so that it was at the right levels which helped a bit but my only real solution at the moment is to sit there for 2 mins idling at 1000rpm and then its fine. Not recommended by some

I've only had my T350c 3 weeks and i've been informed that TADTS.
Is this the case or Do We Have A Problem Houston?

there is no choke circuit or anything, so you will need to hold it on the revs, for a minute or so in this cold weather before it will idle smoothly. Longer depending on how cold it is.
Obviously if your engine needs a tune up that will not help things.

Knowledgable as usual

Mine needs a trace of throttle to start and then small amount to keep it running if idling for first 30 sec -then fine, its done this since I've owned it. It doesnt seem that all owners have this problem particularly latter built engines? (mines an 03) but it been a bit worse but it has been bitter in the morning

Chris,
Mine starts exactly the same as yours and is a 53, but i don't know anyone with a newer version.

Hi Nev just my impression from past threads, I'm sure somebody with more knowledge than i may shed some more light. My idle speed was adjusted on the service before last and did make a difference as mine was cutting out when really cold. sp6 idle speed goes up as it gets hotter. I would nt worry unduly, howver roads near me have been bit slipy so take care out thereMine starts exactly the same as yours and is a 53, but i don't know anyone with a newer version.

my car is a 53 plate, it done it last winter, now with a new engine it still does the same so i think its just the way they are in the cold, once im out my street its usually fine.
My '06 Sag is fine whatever the weather temp.
But once out of the garage I do warm the oil upto 5-10 degrees before setting off by flicking the throttle to rev between 1K-2K.
Not a good idea to sit letting the engine idle to warm up as the bores can glaze. Just keep blipping the throttle without going over 2K revs until oil temp > 10 degrees.
If you can't wait to let it warm up a bit, better to drive it but again, keep the revs below 2K until the oil has reached 10 degrees or so. This will be in a few seconds once you start driving. Over revving it when the oil is cold will eventually damage it.

My t350 is Jan 2006. Now done over 20,000 miles and I have always had this problem. It's fine for 2-3000 miles after each service but then the cold idle speed drops a little and it tends to stall if the revs are not kept up for the first 2-3 minutes after starting.
I only have to stop to get our of my gate so have perfected left foot breaking while keeping the revs at around 1k. After that I have a two mile trip before I have to stop again and by then everything is fine.
After two years and 20k miles it still brings on a big grin every time I go for a drive.
The only problems I have had are a radiator leak (replaced) and a broken throttle cable (temporarily mended at the roadside by the RAC).
Good luck to all you new owners - enjoy!
