Tamora Brake Pads???

My brakes are making a deep almost grinding noise when braking hard at more than around 50mph but my brake pads seem to have a good 4-5 mm left on both sides, any ideas what the noise could be? Also is there an indicator that tells me my pads are low? I looked briefly in the manual and couldn't see anything apart from handbrake and low fluid warnings
