Brake fluid top up

This may be a daft question, but how do you tell if you have enough fluid in the reservoir?

I shone a torch at the reservoir but couldn't see a line indicating where the fluid level is. Worried that meant it was low I removed the top which came out dripping.

So should I expect to be able to see the fluid level line?

Yes it's not easy - if you have someone rock the car while you're looking you'll see it.

But seem to remember the actual arrow for the line may not be on the side you can see - in absence of that you need about 10mm from top to allow for fluid expansion when hot (with top and float in place)

What fluid should I be using? I think a trip to Halfrauds followed by some contortion under the steering wheel is called for today.
