Probably showing up today as its been particulary warmish. Reached 107c at one point but no steam blowing out of expansion cap. As water boils at 100c I am thinking the water sensor is giving a wrong reading. Any views please?
I checked coolant level after engine cooled down and its still at usual level on wooden spoon.

It doesn't boil @ 100c under pressure!

when this happened to my car (its happened twice) i found the reading to be true, one time the radiator gave way, either remove the plug from the sensor and clean the pins, cover in vaseline or the likes and reconnect the plug to the sensor, however it doesnt cost (£20) much so i'd get yourself a new water temp sensor for the ECU, the sensor is the one towards the rear of the block when you remove the airbox, its easy to change and your fans will kick in at the proper temps and unless your on track on a hot day it shouldn't go much above 100 degrees

I keep a spare at home, its comming to LeMans with me smile

And as a failsafe for when your away and the car is boiling in traffic, if theres a risk of overheating, pop the bonnet, squeeze your arm (im skinny) under the airbox and pull the plug on the ECU sensor (the alternator is hot hot hot though), it will automatically kick both fans on until you turn the car off or plug in the sensor again!

Do you think there could be some air in the system? Or the level a smidge low? I know on mine, that if i gets just a tiny bit too low the temp reading goes up a bit. I don't have the extra expansion tank, and the natural level is halfway down the chamber, just above the side outlet to the engine. Any lower and it starts to read higher.

Also, do your fans cut in and cool it down OK? The temp should drop a few degrees quite soon after the fans come on.

For reference, out and about yesterday, sitting in some traffic, various kinds of driving, my temp read between 88 and 91 all day. (The fact that it reads 5 different temps in 5 seconds is annoying though - but they were in this range.)

mine used to run up to slightly above 100 and then the fans would of cut in, wouldn't worry too much. With the warmer weather I'd expect in traffic for the temp to rise quickly.

Mine reached 112 when stuck in traffic on Saturday afternoon, but then stayed just below 100 all the way home on the motorway.

Going to get it checked by the dealer, as it seems to be very high.

Everytime I stopped only one fan was working, so I am hoping that it is the temp sensor for the display that has a problem.

Air con can affect the running temp of a speed six even if it is not on, as there is an air restriction on the radiator.

Thanks for all the advice. I will certainly check the fans out first.

Mine peaked at 117 (or was it 118? All that stress makes me forget) while in a traffic jam in the south of France a couple of years ago, with both fans running. Nothing broke, apart from the seal on the rad cap. Still fine now too.smile

Hi guys, mine seems to be running slightly hot as well. Replaced both water temp sensors and it's still the same...

Worth trying a new expansion cap? Someone on here said it's same as the one on a VW Golf, is that correct?

I have noticed with the aircon on it does run warmer, turn the aircon off and the temp dips a few degrees.

Mine tends to get hot even with the fans on in the summer, but only at tickover in traffic. If I hold the revs at about avove 1300rpm it is fine.

Mine does it too and makes me worry as I'm off to Europe in the beginning of July. It is at the moment getting to 102 and the other day with the air con on 107 all in traffic. My water levels sit just below the pipe outlet to the engine but will blow water out the top if I top it up above the pipe. Thinking I might replace the cap just in case. Will the extra tank on the newer cars make the difference I'm looking for?(for the temps to stay below 100)

I fitted the extra tank to my car, slightly more stable temp but only reads a degree or so less. I was willing to try anything to cure my problem, the tank didn't cure it though, it was the ecu sensor and then the second fan had seized. poke a screwdriver through and make sure it spins freely....

The fans are both running freely and are both coming on. Is it worth getting the extra water tank just for ease of checking levels?
Where do other peoples water level sit?(with just the older style one tank)

It won't cure a problem as you don't actually need the extra tank on most cars. You must have something wrong with either the sensors, water level (air pockets maybe) or the remote possibility of an engine problem. I'd start with the sensors and bleed the system.

Checked the fans today. One is spinning one is notfrown It can maintain 99degrees with just one running on a coolish day but shoots up further as outside temp increases

Happened to me also, they are a pain to change over too as the radiator needs to come out! not too expensive to do yourself though

Mine has been running a little warm with the nicer weather (just over 100) and I came to the conclusion that the water temp sensor needs replacing as it intermittently cuts in the fans and then sometimes doesnt.

Is it perfectly fine to run without the sensor connected until I can replace the sensor? wheres the best place to get the sensor quickly?

Cheers in advance
