hi all ,after 4 wonderfull years of a chimaera,the time is coming for a change.i would like a tamora,but the wife wants a boxster.im working on her and seem to be winning the battle problem is its her car,but i cant imagine life without a tiv now.anyway ive been reading posts which seem to sugest the cars post 04 have stronger engines,is this 04 cars onwards or cars after 04 ie.o5 and do all tamoras have power steering,as the lack of it is the main reason she wants to swop the chim

The general advice is to buy as late a model as you can stretch to with later 04 car's supposedly having more robust engines alternatively get one with a recent rebuild! I had been told originally late 53 cars but others will be better placed to advise

Always look for a car that has been cared for and warmed up religously

i'd be looking for one with a rebuild regardless of which year it came out of the factory. always a chance that someone used a jam butty instead of a head gasket.

there's some pretty bold claims around warrantees post rebuild from a few companies now, which suggests the engineering problems have been largely ironed out.

Yes all Tams had PAS, and are a league apart from Boxsters. The post 04 engines are stronger but to be honest the 3.6 sp6 seems to be less stressed then the 4.0 sp6's and less prone to failure. Totaly non scientific and mostly opinion based of course.

thanks for replies,for me as said no comparison tam everytime,but as i said,its the wifes car,but i feel sure once she has driven one she will be convinced,as the only thing she doesnt like is the steering,but she also fancies a push button roof.i supose with the rebuilds its a matter of who as done the work,are they rebuilt with stronger components?and it seems as though some cars have top ends and some full engine rebuilds,why is this and if just top rebuilt is the bottom end likely to go

As I understand it, (and that is rather limited) it tends to be the head cams/fingers etc that go on the sp6. The bottom end, to paraphrase a mechanic friend of mine, are tough as f**k. Some people when rebuilding will have the whole lot done, this could be indicative of an engine that has let go and done damage to the bottom end or someone just being very conscientious and wanting to get the job done completely. In my opinion a good head rebuild should be all you need. That said my 02 tam is coming up to 26,000 miles and still going strong with no rebuild and no signs of needing one (it does get checked quite regularly though).
