When I start my car up, a fuel sensor error on the dashboard appers. Is this a major problem?

Just the beginning of the end in my case. Started with a fault reading which became more regular, then funny fuel amount readings, anything from -275 lites to +275 litres. Then ran out of petrol on the Yorks Wolds, thanks to a local farmer who happened to have a gallon of 2 star for his lawnmower spare, so decided to change the sensor myself. Not a difficult job unless you have big hands.
