Cause for concern???

Hi all,

I have had my Tam for five months and no problems so to speak until now! I really hope this is nothing serious...

I went to Goodwood today for the Super Car meet (AWESOME) and have done about a hundred mile round trip with the engine all nice and hot.

Whilst heading back home, I gave Tam a few quick starts off the traffic lights and found that I was loosing power at around the 4000 - 5000 Rpm mark, way before the rev lights or limiter etc. Even coming to work this afternoon on the motorway, I put my foot down a bit in fourth and again there was the drop off in power.

This seems to be intermittent at the moment. What's going on? Fuel injection problem perhaps I'm no mechanic and have no idea really, so any ideas would be a help.

Probably as Graham said but dont forget your rev limiter works off the oil temp.

Yes your little MBE is quite clever. Its been put in to stop idiots blowing there cars up as they pull out of there drive.

Okay, I'm still learning, 'SO' if the engine's running hot, it will not let me give it the full beans, thus preventing the liklihood of the thing blowing up. Am I on the right track?
Obviously, I always warm the car up before ever going over the 2000 rpm mark and I don't abuse it from cold (or hot).

I'm still scared to death of every little thing in case it's major.
Hmmm the Pleasure vs Pain theory is always haunting me...

If the engines running cold the MBE will bring up the rev warning lights earlier than set, not sure if it actually restricts the revs though (I've not tried)

Its most likely your coil pack as Graham said. You have now said you get the car up to running temp before exploring the revs so it cant be the rev limiter. And yes it will bring on the soft limiter when cold.

Probably needs a service.

Coil and service time I think.

To confirm the 'soft limiter' 'Red' change lamp is programmed by the MBE ECU to come on at 4000rpm if the oil temp is below 40degC (or the sensor/wiring is faulty, this is how I found out)

This soft limiter is only on later Speed 6`s Sags and Tuscan 2 IIRC, Earley Tam`s, T350, and Tuscans don`t have this feature, not sure when it came into production.... 2005???
Jamie as you know i live in Stubbington and i`m more than willing to have a look/listen/second opinion if you want to pop round one evening? You can have listen to sports exhaust if your car is not fitted with them?

hi jamie sorry to hear of your little problem whilst driving home from goodwood.hope you get it fixed without to much expense.

You only notice it after lunch on track days. And it is on all 2004 sp6 cars and maybe before.

My 2000 Tuscan never had it, and, as far as i know my 2003 Tamora don`t, must admit never tryed or looked, so it looks likely, that early 2004 then?

I can confirm my Aug 2003 T350 has this fitted.
Is it in the software programming on the ECU?

I don't know what an ignition coil is or what an MBE thing is. Mine is an early Tam (02) so probably has not got whatever it is.

When I picked up the car it had a massive service by Racing Green, surely it doesn't need another one. I've only just done 2K...

Tam seems to be running ok now. It was in the 80 degree mark when it was playing up, but it seems to fine around the 60 to 70 degree mark. As I say, I really don't know...

Thanks for your concern Jason - Your Tam is the loudest thing I've ever heard. You made some little kids cry when you pulled into Goodwood. I now want a sports exhaust, can't afford one though unfortunately...

Tony, I would love to have a listen to your sports exhaust. Maybe we could meet up in Lee-on-Solent one afternoon now that the suns out again?

Sorry to drag this up, but I just wanted to tell everyone that I now have my Tam back on the road again since its stay at Racing Green.
The problem turned out to be a dodgy fuel pump after all that. I've been going mad without my Tam for so long, but had an awesome drive home this afternoon... The black cloud has lifted.

Racing Green TVR have looked after me like they promised. As a relatively new TVR owner, I was cacking my pants with all the horror stories you hear.

I suppose one big'ish problem in six months isn't bad going then???

I hope I'll be able to make the most of what sunny weather there is left; I've missed out on some of the events I wanted to go on, but at least I will be able to make Santa Pod this weekend (1st time visit).
