3 years old & MOT

Some advice please. My p&j is approaching 3 years old (mid Sept) and I think due for an MOT. The question I have is when do I need to get it done? Will it be needed before my road tax is due 1st Sept, or do I just need to have it MOTd by mid Sept when it is actually 3 years old?
Might seem a dumb question, but never owned a car that has passed through 3 years old before.

your road tax reminder will tell you if you need an MOT

Not sure if it applies to the first MOT, but subsequent ones can be done within 28 days of expirary of the current one, and be valid from the due date.

So maybe you could get yours done a few weeks before the due date, and have it commence on the due date?

I always get mine done a few weeks early to be sure that I can still drive it on the road legally if it fails and needs something changing.

My understanding is that if its under 3 years old then you can get tax without an MOT even if its only a few days. The reminder will tell you though.
