modified cooling thermostat

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has changed their standard 82 degree C coolant thermostat for the non-standard 74 degree C version.

How effective has this been in lowering the temperature of your engine? Any drawbacks?

I am very tempted to go ahead with having one installed as I will very shortly be changing all my hoses for silicone ones, having a new aluminium radiator and having the EPROM updated to make the fans kick in sooner (all by the service guys, not me!)

I currently have no confidence with my cooling (aka boiling pot) system - the hoses have popped off twice - so I want to make sure everything within reason has been done as cost effectively as possible (ie. change the hoses and radiator at the same time)etc.

I guess not many people have changed their thermostats then!

I am beginning to think that maybe my blue coolant cap does not work properly by failing to vent any pressure, because why would a coolant hose pop off, if the cap was not fizzing? Can something so simple as a non working coolant cap affect the whole cooling system?

Sounds like your system could be over pressurized. Might be a bigger problem with exhaust gases getting into the coolant. I'd get the system tested if I were you.

I've never heard of a properly fitted hose popping off.
