Leaving Ticking over when cold
Discussion
Hi is it proven to do any damage to the engine if say..... on a cold morning you leave your car ticking over to warm up, I know diffs, tyres, brakes, gearbox, etc would not be warm so gently goes when setting off on a journey, but theres nothing in the handbook under "warming up procedure" to say you should'nt do it. Anyone know any diffrent???
Thanks
Thanks

Tickover is not good as the oil isn't being moved around as much as ideal, plus idle speed places to highest loadings on various internals such as the camshaft. Not good. Best to at the very least hold the idle at 1200-1500rpm, or just drive off which is what I recommend.
I agree. Never let the sp6 idle when started from cold, the oil pressure is low so no oil may be getting to the Cam, even with the oil way expansion I had done with the rebuild. It's best to start off immediately and get that oil pressure up. Thats my view.grumbledoak said:
10 secs at 1500rpm, then off we go!
As said, the Speed6 suffers from low oil pressure at idle, so you wont be doing her any favours leaving her idle for long...

Always did the same - a few seconds at 1500RPM or so till everything's flowing and to stop it stalling on a cold morning, then off at low revs.willtvr said:

Yes, sorry, I mean oil flow.
If lack of flow rather than pressure is the cause of excessive wear wouldn't an uprated pump cure the problem assuming such an item was available?
