Weird Problem Starting (or not...) on T350c

Just wondered if anyone else has had this problem or if anyone can shed any light on what it might be...

A couple of times when the T350's oil has got above 80, i have parked it up and then it refuses to start again. Both times have been in an underground car park (very considerate machine when breaking down - right in the parking space).

I have to leave it to cool down (last time took an hour and a half) and then it jumps to life again.

When it's not starting the display says 'power failure shutting system down', it's like the battery is flat, but it isn't. The starter tries to turn but doesn't manage to. I'm wondering if it's the starter motor on the way out... once it's cooled down it's fine again.

Could be the starter on the way out, but it could also be a wiring fault causing a voltage dip on the earth or 12V supplies. A voltmeter would soon narrow it down if you are able to reproduce the problem.

Is it a rebuilt engine?

Mine did exactly this for first 500m after a rebuild, due to the new piston rings, valvegear etc still being tight when it reached 80C or more, but has been fine since once thoroughly run in at varying engine speeds etc.

it has had a rebuild, but that was about 5000 miles ago (at 10K according to log) so it should be well worn in now...

i suppose i should add it's happened when it's been stuck in traffic and not moving too much. If it happens again, i'll try checking the voltage.

If it's giving that error message before you try the starter motor, then I'd not look to the starter as the problem until you've checked off all other options. Would start with a voltmeter, as suggested!

the error comes up on the LCD as the key is being turned, it looks normal until then, i.e. all the gauges are giving out readings etc... then when the key is turned, the starter tries to turn, and the system shuts down with the error in the above post.

where would i connect the voltmeter to, presumably the battery, which means taking the wheel off, yep?

Check engine earth cable on right side of chassis/engine mount bolt to engine is not loose or frayed.
