Would you believe it. A couple of months ago I was seriously looking at making the move to a Sagaris but couldn't find the right car. I really wanted a Jaguar Racing green Sag and my dream car has come up for sale:

I am very tempted but the problem is I've been looking at other cars since and its currently a close call between the Sag, Aston martin Vantage or Ferrari 360. What should I do????

With a name like Trevor, i would have thought the choice would of been obvioushehe
Seriously, a mate of mine has a vantage, and brought it round last weekend, was so disappointed, very nice car, but so big and heavy and so , dare i say it, very out dated interior. No sense of occassion that you get with the TVR. Just my 2p worth.

What about the 360 then? Its such a difficult one as you say. Would the 360 sit somewhere in between, a little more luxury than the TVR and more sense of occasion than the Aston?

Also your right, as my name is Trevor I've always wanted a TVR and sure I will get one at some point but don't know if this sag is worth the same as an aston or fezza

Not really had much experience with a 360, so to be fair couldn`t say. But, I have recently brought a Saggy and i really don`t think anything else would come close to giving that grin factor. Sure, not got the badge, but have also been in garage forecourts when filling up when also a fezza has been there, and guess whos car people look at. The Saggy just has so much presence and a lot of people just don`t know what they are.
Personal choice at the end of the day, but I always buy with my heart.

I think buying any of the cars I've mentioned is with the heart. If it was with my head I'd be buying a mondeo or something smile

I do agree that nothing else on the road looks quite like a sag and it has character in spades. But the appeal of owning a Ferrari or Aston is very strong. I think if the Sag was in the low £30's bracket it would be a no brainer but I think its too closely priced to other exotics at £40k.

All three cars have their relative merits, I would also struggle and have gone through a similar thought pattern. If all three are realitively the same price there is one big difference. I am certain that the servicing would be cheaper in a Sag and the parts are readily available and more realistically priced. I have a friend with an Aston and the running costs are dreadfull. All straight 6 owners are aware of the potential pitfalls and either have a warranty or a couple of grand put aside (I know a rebuild can run to ^k or so if it is really sick!). If I had an Aston or Fezza I would have no idea how much to put aside.
Just my humble opinion and both my Trevors (T350T and Chim 400) give loads fo smiles per galon and that quirky something!!
Buy the Sag, more exclusive as fewer built!

Have a look on the Aston forum. The Vantage (although very beautiful), appears to suffer from many problems and they are loosing money VERY quickly right now.

As for the 360, very nice, just check servicing costs. One of the services involves changing various belts etc and it sets you back a few grand!!!

This leaves one choice, although it'd be better in pearl yellow smile

Funnily enough I looked at changing the Sagaris to either a V8 Vantage Roadster or 360 Spider last year before prices crashed as I wanted a convertible. I drove both, but just couldn't bring myself to let the Sagaris go.

This was partly the heart, but also the head. I had a 355 for about 4 years and it cost at least twice as much to service as a TVR, plus resale values are very affected by mileage. If depreciation is of any concern to you and you want to do more than about 2000 miles a year you'll need another car too.

I was told by a dealer that sells both Ferrari and Aston that the Vantage, rightly or wrongly, is considered by the trade to be less prestigious than other Astons or any Ferrari. Because they were very fashionable (the footballer effect) to start with there were more on the market than prospective customers - hence massive depreciation. Even worse now of course. Also, they do seem to have mechanical issues, but they come with a 3 year warranty so it should be possible to get them sorted if at some inconvenience. Servicing prices are somewhere between TVR and Ferrari.

What I eventually did though was to buy a Griff as well. biggrin

Thanks everyone for the comments so far

I've done quite a bit research all the cars particularly the Aston. The general opinion on the vantage is that they normally get very minor problems (windows not dropping when closing the door) etc within the first year of ownership but after that it seems to be a fairly reliable car. Most owners I've spoken to say they have never had any major mechanical problems with the cars.

As for running costs, I think the Aston would work out ok. Most cars come with warranties and the option to extended the warranty every year for about £1500 - £2k (off the top of my head) which would cover me in the event the car had a major problem and then its just servicing.

The Ferrari is a different beast altogether. Again from speaking to owners they are very reliable but this may be down to the fact the cars only cover very few miles a year with many 8 year old cars barely touching 15,000 miles. The service history must be impeccable and have all the right stamps before even thinking of buying any 360. As for maintenance that’s the bit that hits the hardest. Cambelt needs doing every 15,000miles or every 3 years (3 years it is then smile ) and its not a cheap job. A specialist like Verdi offer massive discounts over the over priced Ferrari dealers but throw in a new clutch and its big bucks
http://www.verdi-ferrari.com/servicing.htm

Then to the sag. The main worry is if the engine lets go. The Aston and Ferrari seem less likely to have a major mechanical fault but the TVR is a tricky one. I know there will be plenty of owners saying run it properly and you'll have no problems etc but for every 5 problem free owners there seems to be 1 horror story.

Finally as for depreciation I think this year will see the worst and then prices will firm up. Ferrari 360's can't get much cheaper as it will push 348's etc down to £15k area which I just can't see happening. The vantage may drop some more around mid 30's but they have hit a level now where there are a lot of potential buyers all looking for good early models so demand is quite high meaning that they haven't dropped much in the last 2 months or so.

This isn't an investment, I just want to own an amazing car, not too worried about depreciation as its all relative. If my 360 drops £20k then the 599 drops £40k so when I come to trade up I am closer to my next dream car. Its just servicing costs as potenial pitfalls I need to be aware of with any of these cars.

Having said all of that I've requested the full spec of the sag from racing green. I am going to go and look at the car and let my heart decide I think.

Two years ago a friend of mine bought a 360 spider, and I was lucky enough to have it whenever I wanted it, whilst they are impressive cars, I'd rather have a sag all day long. (Will have one in the next 5-6 weeks.) The Ferrari seems almost sterile in comparison, it doesn't get the heart racing and the back of the legs tingling like the sag does.

I'll have a small wager you come out of Racing Green the proud new owner of a Sagaris. hehe Good luck whatever you decide.

Trev. I myself have thought about going down the aston route, but simply cant bare letting her go.
Here's my opinion: You can have an aston or a ferrari any time. That Sag is a rare breed! and lets face it, there never going to produce these babys again so go get yourself a bit of british history that you will be so proud of owning. The drive, charm and attention that these cars deliver is breath taking.

Join the bad boy club and get the TVR....and dont worry about the engine dude. I scared myself silly reading this forum about mechanical issues before I bought mine, Its all lies and scandal ;-) seriously though, dont let that put you off. The smile it will put on your face is priceless. Fezzers are wky cars anyway...mind you I would love a 430.

Very nice in that colour. IMHO Sagaris' only work in extreme colours.

I'm out of toy cars for a few months, but I sold my T350T recently and at the time thought I would replace it in future with an R8 or Vantage (after 10 years of TVRing and no new TVRs I thought maybe it was time to change). Trouble is, upon closer inspection neither of these other options tweaks the emotions like my 'old' T350. I am not a fan of new Ferraris anyway. A Gallardo might swing me, but the running costs would make a Sagaris/T350 look cheap.

I can see me in a T350/Sagaris in 2010, ideally with 450+hp to make it feel like a real step up from my T350.

weve had both for 3 years now - Vantage and Sagaris, done 30K miles plus in each car, they really are different cars completely, although both are 2 seater coupes the character is very different - trying to argue one over another would just give different pros/cons

its really a heart thing - which one you want the most, if it was a daily driver for lots of miles id go Vantage, if it was for 6K a year and fun use Id go sagaris

oh - the Aston is cheapest to run, of course, a TVR is 2x as expensive, just because of 6K intervals, consumables are similar in price, and the Aston hasnt gone wrong yet, the Sag has had quite a few things fixed and of course the warranty ceased to exist a while ago now frown

sadly the Sag will be up for sale next week when its back from its service (I had an accident last year, cant drive for quite some time, and 3 cars just sat around is a bit excessive when you are on sick pay)

so in summary, if you really love the look of the Sag and want to use that performance somewhere (the public road isnt too good for this) then go for that, if you want a very nice daily driver sportscar, that you can occasionally track then the Vantage is great too smile

TVR had problems with that colour and stopped offering it (before they stopped offering cars altogether!). When I was at the factory once there was a Sag about to go into the spray booth for a respray and it hadn't been delivered yet! Looks great though.
