Cold - late 40's. Hot idle - mid teens.

80! Suggest you have a faulty gauge.

My 3 SP6's have had a cold idle of between 40 and 50.

My gauge's are electrical and mechanical. Both gauges are fine. I just have a very well put together engine by a bearded Northerner using Royal Purple fully synthetic XPR SAE 10W40 oil. At 80/90 degrees C reving at 7k it is 65psi.

Is yours a rather special engine?

Dulfords are doing a new oil pump which is said to be producing 70psi when cold and 30psi when oil temp is 80(hot).
I'm having one fitted next week.

When cold (< 15c) @ 1k around 55psi to 60psi
When hot (> 55c) @ 1k around 20psi

Make sure you always keep the oil at the maximum level (even above..) I found that if its at all below that you get pinking (probably Cylinder 6 as usual)

There's a certain amount of variation in the sensors..

To the guys with the higher pressure pumps, what reassurances from the supplier did u get that the higher pressure won`t fubar seals?

Oil pressure shouldn't have anything to do with pinking (pre-ignition), unless you have no oil pressure, but then you'll be hearing lots of pinking type noises :-(

Pinking is either timing being a smidge out, throttle pots needing adjustment, low octane fuel or a combination of these (I'm sure an expert will have other reasons too).

Yup

Have one in my 2000 Tuscan.70psi in full chat when hot and 40psi on hot idle.

My warm idle is about 12psi, at 5000 rpm its around 45-50. Looking at the bar guauge this is 2 bars at idle and near full using 5-40 Mobil 1 Syn S.
When she goes in for a service though I'm going to change to 15/50 which is what I believe OpieOils recommend for the S6.

How much is it fitted please?

I think the part is about £350 but unsure of fitting I would think it's an engine out job. so probably a bag of sand for a stand alone job.

Quite expensive as a stand alone i suppose, but good to get done if engine has to come out.

I guess in order of importance the raceproved camcover is prob more of a priority for wear on start up, given the physics of when the wear occurs... virtually the same price too

I've been informed by a very reputable TVR engine builder that the new "High flow" oil pump is a waste of money. Speed 6 engines never had an issue of lack of oil pressure/flow to the head. The problem was the number of oil pathways into the head.

He described it to me like this - Imagine a farmer has an enormous field and he has designed a watering system under the ground. Then someone who knows what they're talking about comes along and tells him the design is all wrong and there aren't enough water lines laid in his field to sufficiently supply the water needed.
The answer is not to then just increase the flow and pressure to the existing (lack of) water lines, as this would be pointless, but to redesign and increase the number of water lines.

Remember that these are dry sumped engines, the oil pump does not have to lift the oil from the bottom of the engine (i.e the sump) to the top of the engine. You do not need high oil pressures.

Very well thanks John, first time out of the rev's being limited at 5k over in Spa a few weeks back took it to 7k. Bit of a peperoni to say the least. I shall have a chat with you at Rock's.

I see what you mean about the oil ways, but most people that are talking about having this oil pump change done have already got the extra oil way put in(I know I have). I cant help but think it will benefit the engine with more oil being pushed around it.
