Neother do I though very rarely do I ever get anywhere near 40l in when I get to this stage, supposedly a 54l tank? When totally full it only ever shows a max of 51 on the dash.Mine only ever got to 51/52 litres full. No point in trying to put more fuel in once it clicks off as it will only spit it out.
Once the low fuel light comes on you're gambling - as everyone has seen the reading varies. All you need is a hill and you could run out of fuel. Not worth the risk.
Worst I ever got was 3L in that no-mans land twixt Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg. Serves me right for not refueling when we left Trier.

I've heard it's not good for the engine to let the fuel get too low. How low? In what way is it not good? 15l seems like quite a long way from running low. In 5 years I would be sure I've filled up at least 400 times. I'd guess that 350 of those my display has shown 4L or less. quite a few 1L. I have never run out of fuel. What sort of damage might I have done. Engine seems okay so far.

'Muck & Twigs' from the bottom of your fuel tank entering your fuel feed system. Not worth the risk. I like plenty of visits to the petrol pump I make loads of new friends! shorts! said:

Where are you lot filling up from? I'm fairly sure my petrol station doesn't put twigs in the petrol. Filtering technology has come on a bit since the 1950s.
I can beat Dom. I filled up on 0 in the Alps, but that was a mistake. Did at least 20 miles from when it was on 1 before I found a petrol station.

that's good to know, so i'm presuming then from 4L you've got at least 50 miles, similar to a 'reserve' tank amount... obviously not intending to repeat getting to 4L but handy to know if you get caught out.The problem we have is that Petrol stations do not all keep 95 Octane, which is the highest we have, and I certainly do not use 93. The other problems is that there are long distances between towns and cities, and if I am on the open road, I am more cautious to keep filling up. There have been a few times that I was nearly caught out having to drive some 40 plus kms after the said signal. If I am at the coastal low altitude, I usually add an octane booster, to avoid any detonation due to the high compression ratio of the engine.

i don't intend to be risking it, like i said, it's only if the worst case scenario happens and i get caught out (as i did at the weekend - beeped on the motorway)... just wanted to be sure i could make 20/30 miles for fuel without needing the passenger to be pushing!! hmmm.. i wonder if you can adjust the point at which it beeps... maybe to 10L?
