As the title states - the aircon is not working on my Saggy curse

I have had a good look through Graham Varleys orange bible but still can't figure it out...

If I switch the aircon on, the compressor does not kick into life (no noise from it or dip in engine revs).

From POD menu 5 on the dash display, one of the options will allow you to see the clutch for the aircon kicking in and out when you turn the aircon on / off. The clutch is permanently out and will not come in.

Lastly the compressor has a white wire going to it which I assume is the feed. Again, no volts going to it.

I have spoken to a fellow Sag owner and he said all it needs is a re-gas and to possibly sort the leak where all my gas would have leaked out of the system. whilst not doubting him, I could do without throwing money down the drain getting a re-gas if the system has a more sinister problem. Also, I cannot understand why the compressor would not kick in for low gas pressure.

Its not a fuse (heater and blower work off same fuse and they are ok) and I'm not aware of a relay for the system.

Any ideas? Any common problems or areas where leaks are common?

Many thanks in advance,
L33.

I'm not an aircon expert, but here's a thought - doesn't the compressor rely on the aircon gas for lubrication. So maybe there's a fail safe that if there is low gas pressure the compressor is not engaged?

More than possible...
Like you, I'm no expert either, but this would sound logical.

Hi there,

There are a few things that would stop the a/c comp pulling in, the most common one would be a lack of refrigerant in the aircon system.
There is a pressure switch which detects if any refrigerant is present but if the pressure drops below a set point the compressor will not engage. This is to protect the compressor from a lack of lubrication as the refrigerant also moves an oil around the A/C circuit.

The common ways for the system to loose it's gas are either a lack of use ( various seals and pipes drying out because no oil has been moved around the system over winter) or mechanical failure, Corrosion, abraision or stone damage.

Get it tested by a good automotive airconditioning expert. This should not be that expensive £50 to £100 depending on area.

Make sure that they add a UV dye along with the refrigerant when recharging as this aids future leak detection and will reduce future fault finding time.

Cheers Ade

Cheers for the advise Ade.
I didn't know the compressor stopped working with low gas.
I know Halfrauds do a free check but don't know how good this would be?

Hi lee
Yes,
Ade's advice spot on
On the sag the trinary switch monitors the pressures, which does fail . Pull the connection plug off a few times & see if that sorts it, if not best try Tvr specialist as the switch may need replacing

Thanks for the replies.
I have looked at the connection on the Trinary switch and cleaned up the contacts and still no good.
Is there any way of testing the switch before I get it replaced?

Hi L33.

There are ways to test the trinary switch but that can only really be done if you know that there is pressure in the system.

Please PLEASE dont use halfrauds they only have very crude methods for recharging the system. You can buy the same can and hose off ebay and with no experience try to refill the a/c system and still do a better job than most halfrauds!!!

If there have been a lot of failures of the pressure switchs I would assume that there was a bad batch manufactured, as a rule the switches tend to be quite reliable.

If ever your out for a blast around mid wales, pm me and I will gladly take a look at it for you.

Ade

Just had a look at your profile, your not that far from me I,m about 20 miles south of Shrewsbury.

Many thanks For the replies.

Ade, I might well take you up on that offer if I have no joy - thanks.

Graham, I'll have look at this on Wednesday.

Well, I had another look last night.

IC is on.
PR is on (So I'm assuming the system has gas in it?) I also assume that my trinary switch must be OK, otherwise this would read off and the radiator fans would run continiously? (Page 395 of the bible).
CL is off.

Any ideas please as by my reasoning, a new trinary switch and re-gas is not going to do the trick?

Anyone know if I will loose the gas in the system if I replace the trinary switch?

Many thanks.

Just an update, I had the system re-gassed yesterday and all is well biggrin
The bible suggests "approx" 725cc of gas but this didn't work for me (compressor still not cutting in), however 800cc worked a treat.

All in, a bargain £30 at kwik-fit.

Many thanks for all your replies.

Hi L33

Just to comfirm was it CC's they measured the refrigerant quantity in as it should be done in gramms?
It's just that I was involved with the company that supplied all the A/C recharge machines to kwik fit, and I had the fun of having to provide technical support to some "interesting" technicians.

I remember one guy telling me that I didn't know what I was talking about when I was pointing him to where the service ports for the a/c were on a car, only for him to realise that he was in the wrong car and that it didn't have a/c ( was good when the penny dropped. He was pretty polite after that!!!)

Glad to hear that it is working well.

It was indeed CCs it was measured in - as per Grahams excellent sagaris bible, along with 60cc of pag46 oil.

I don't know where the gas escaped to, but it passed a leak detection and a vacuum test on Kwik-fits machine. I guess like many aircon systems, the seals have dried out slightly and allowed a very small leak. I expect I will have to have the system recharged again next year.
