T350c - Very strange noise from rear when pulling away

Hi all

Very strange question/problem that occured yesterday which I need some help with as I have never experienced before.

Decided to pop to Harewood House yesterday for the Classic & Vintage show with the Yorkshire Post motor show but the day turned out to be a compete nightmare!!! It was obviously a popular event as we were stuck in stand-still traffic for 2 hrs getting there (I only live 7 mies away!!!) and it was very hot but the car was fine on the way there and all the temps remained reasonable.

We parked up and had a good walk around and saw some of the motors but to be honest wasnt that impressed over all.

After a couple of hours we decided to leave and beat some of the traffic back so we got back in the car and joined the queue to leave. This took about another 30 mins in total but instantly I noticed something that the T350 has never done in nearly 2 years which really worried me as I just could not fihure out what it was!!

Basically the car was still warm despite being sat for 2 hrs but in the queue when leaving, every time I went to set off from standstill in 1st there was a really bad shuddering coming from the rear of the car for about 5 seconds which then disappeared when moving. It was shuddering when the clutch was biting and transferring power to the wheels. I couldnt work out exactly where the shudder was originating from but wondered if this meant the diff! It also wasnt happening in any other gear but did it every time we stopped and started again in the leaving queue, and also at roundabouts and traffic lights on the way back.

I obviously took it easy on the way back as I was really worried but the car exhibited no other symptoms whatsoever, and was fine in any other gear apart from setting off from standstill in 1st.

Has anyone ever heard of anything similar as I really am quite worried.

Sounds like it could be the top bush on the diff having partially broken up

Mine showed early signs of fatigue recently at 33k miles (and lots of standing starts, to be fair) and was replaced as a precaution.

I agree - I had a very similar feeling in my old Chimaera when the diff bushes fell apart. It was a very noticeable judder/vibration as if the back end was trying to get power to the diff. Once the initial torque was out of the way and clutch fully up it went.

Both of those suggestions initially sound like exactly what was happening - Looking back over the last few weeks I also think that something at the back wasnt feeling as 'tight' as it normally is.



The car has just done 35k miles and will be going in for a 12k service in a few weeks time anyway so i'll get the work done then. Is the car still safe for the next few weeks? as when I moved the car out of the garage earlier it wasnt doing it! Is it likely the problem was exagerated by the heat and being stuck in stand-still traffic for so long? (clutch too warm perhaps?)

Should be ok for a few hundred miles I would think if treated with gentle starts and gearchanges, would normally get noticeably worse first rather than just suddenly fall apart.

After a bit of investigation and a ride out in a mates 993 carerra 2 I think the problem may be flywheel related as his exhibits exactly the same problem mine has developed!

Apparently its a flatspot or uneven surface on the flywheel and his occurred similarly on a hot day whilst stuck in traffic.

Anyone experienced the same? I only had a new clutch + slave in Nov which was less than 2000 miles ago.

the clutch on my tuscan will make a very strange noise when taking up drive when im stuck in traffic on a hot day with both fans running, will also sometimes "kangeroo" aswell, its fine in normal use, clutch is actually an ajp cerb one

Ok so that moves the source of the sound quite a bit as the flywheel is at the front of your car( It can be difficult to locate the source of noise sometimes). If you are not sure of the location it might be an engine mount going. As they fail they can develop a vibration at low revs that smooths out at higher revs. Just a thought.

If the clutch was replaced with a Raceproved re-conditioned one rather than an AP clutch, I had one that lasted 3k miles compared to the original's 25k
