Hot gear knob

Hello all

I have been reading that this is a fairly common issue.

How can it be resolved? Can I do this myself? If so, how.

Is it easier to just get a gear knob which isn't made of steel i.e. a leather one?

I wouldn't mind getting my hands a bit dirty and doing it myslef if anyone else could direct me.

The hand brake and the alloy surround will get hot too. I think later cars have a heat sink to help dissapate the heat.

Can't you just unscrew the steel one and replace it with a leather/aftermarket one.

It will still get hot, but it wont be so bad.

The ally surround for the handbrake sometimes becomes too hot to touch on mine. Its a 54 plate so I'm not sure when the heat shielding came in but it certainly wasn't on mine, the heat soak from that area is like a radiator on full blast at times, though oddly enough the gear knob is the only part that doesn't get hot!

You can replace the gear lever and the knob for something classy - not the MAX POWER stuff.

I would ideally like to keep the lot, but if its too hot to touch - its rediculous!

Maybe leather ones might be better. I know that MOMO do some nice ones.

Mine's also a 54 and it's the handbrake suround which causes me the most bother.

When I bought a posh gear knob it came with a leather drawbag that you could put over it in summer or winter, perhaps you could find one of those then you don't need to change anything.

Titanium gear knob, stays cool in summer and warms up instantly in winter, looks cool too!

It's not really to hot to touch is it?

Mine was at it's hottest sat in traffic going into Monaco. The car read 50C on the temp gauge and the glue melted on my keyring so the badge fell off. I could still change gear though.

To be honest, I have only driven my car once and I noticed that the gear know was very very hot!

I also have a Civic type-r and this gets hot, but only from the sun.

The Tamora gear know was bearable, but I can imagine that on a long journey it could get bad...

If it gets silly, then I will look into improving this some how.

A new gear knob may be an easy solution - bout would prefer to keep it all original.

How easy and/or effective is the heatsink? Sounds like there are mixed results.

I have made the bar which connects the lever ball
out of Titanium, keeps much cooler now, because
titan only tranfers 1/3 of the heat!!!!
