Relays how do they work?

With my ongoing project to eliminate my fault codes i have replaced the relays.
I have found water in them infact on saturday the car would'nt start i could'nt hear the fuel pump.
Pulling the relay out and popping in out of it's box it was full of mud.
A few others were also damp.
I have replaced these now and ordered a new fuse box.
I think i have cured the leak hopefully.
Anyway drove the car tonight since replcing the brown relay im sure it's not me car behaved differently power was'nt the same as before smoother and above all was the sound of the exhaust much louder.
I checked the boot was shut it was that different also gave me a chance to test my racing reds.
Hence the title only change is the relay.
It's me is'nt it??
BTW reached 110c after 15miles and both fans were on.....Fusebox? About replaced everthing else.

Crikey - I'd just like to say that it seems like you're fixing everything on that car? Did the last owner treat it like st or what?

How is the water getting into the relays - is there a leak along the bottom or side of the windscreen, which then runs down the various bits of chassis and trim?

Topline sums it up quiet nicely.

As for the screen well the st who sold it me covered up the broken in one corner and very milky in both corners windscreen.
It had a fusebox replacement by power in september last year diagnosed as a leaky screen.
My thoughts are that the st did'nt do anything about it.
I replaced the screen 2 months ago and all my water tests reveal nothing apart from leaks at the bottom of the doors but i can fix this.
So all i can say it must still be in the system so i will replace the board.

If the electrics have got damp then I'm afraid you are probably looking at the prospect of corrosion induced electrical problems 6-12 months down the line.

Fitted the replacement fusebox tonight but sadly problems remain overreading.
When i was at dom's (mates now) i asked him to put the car on his computer which he did.
Car fully warmed up read 92c on the computer 105c on the pod.
There were also other misreadings so car ok just a fault somwhere.
Split old fusebox open and as good as new staining round one relay wiped off.
Thinking now off fitted secondary earth straps.
Car sounded normal to me today so must have forgot how she sounded but i did put my mats back in today.

Whats the battery like Paul? I have noticed since I replaced mine the dash readings are more stable. This might be unrelated but maybe the battery is kippered or you have a poor earth (terminal not tigh/poor contact?)

Got to admit im running out of ideas now.
Battery is about a year old replaced by power for the former owner.
Had the battery out 3 times cleaning checking etc
Im going to take off the earths under airbox tomorrow night and see if there contaminated with oil.
A thought if i unclip the water sensor should both fans kick in.Also for the thermistor?

Don't think the fans start if the water temp sensor is diconected. Mine unpluged itself somehow after about 8 months or so, all that happened was an error on the dash saying water sensor fault. Fans ran as normal as there are two sensors one for the ECU the other for the dash. You can make the fans run I have seen it on a thread somewhere, I think you need to unplug something at the fan end?

I`ve never run the computer software so I`m unsure if it displays the water temperature reading from the ECU or POD sensor (or possibly both)..

Have you checked the wiring to the ECU sensor, as far as I`m aware the sensor will return a voltage to indicate the required temp level (or resistance, but I could be wrong here..) - so any problems with wiring will alter the voltage (or resistance) and display incorrect values..

PC software shows readings from the engine control unit, AFAIK you can't read the readings from the dash controller.

PC Software bypasses the dash straight to engine.

Are there two water temp sensors? One at the back of the engine for the ECU and another one at the front?

I think the fans should run with the ignition on at any temp if you unplug one of them but not sure which.

Tonight's job

Took the airbox of tonight and unclipped the water sensor above no5 cylinder and it's full of water!
This can't help can it?
Must be a design fault as the bonnet vent is just above it.
Need to get to maplins and get some heatshrink.
Thinking of filling cap with vaseline.
