Where are all the pops and bangs?
Discussion
My last tiv was a v8 engined cerbie, and I loved it. As childish as it is, one of the things I enjoyed most was he artilery fire that was readily emitted on over run. Nothing beats exploding your way through the countryside of a Sunday afternoon. The thing is, I didn't expect to have to trade down in terms of aural satisfaction when I got my Tam this summer. In an effort to remedy the situation, I fitted some decats over the weekend, as I know this made a big difference to the noise the cerb made, however it doesn't seem to jave has much effect. Hot or cold, backing off hard or gently, it just doesn't want to give me the pops and bangs. The car seems to run faultlessly, is totally reliable and certainly pulls well, but I can't help but worry now that something's up. I know the speed six is the more civilised animal compared with my old ajp, but come on, it's still a bloody TVR!
So, how much does your tam/350 pop and bang?

My old Cerby was decatted and sports exhuasted'! It was loud...
My Tuscan has sleeved cans and has recently been decatted....Its LOUDER...
It also pops and bangs like it has two small canons mounts on the underside of the car. Its not really a civilised car at all now in fact i feel like a complete hooligan....im sure i will get over it
Sports exhaust and decat should see you with all the noise you will ever need and more!!

Hmmmm..... Looks like some further tinkerage is in order.
Thing is, after trying a few different exhaust combinations on the cerb, I managed to get it so that it had all the artillery, but wasn't deafening on the motorway. I hate to say it, but there's a t350 local to me that's got a sports back box, and I'm afraid IMHO it sounds a bit, erm, chavvy. I just thought it lost the cultured timbre of the speed six by sounding a bit rough.
What I noticed whilst fitting the decats is that the centre pipes have what look like small expansion chambers fitted in line. I was thinking then that perhaps by replacing them with straight through pipes, but still retainkngbthe stock muffler at the back, I might get the explosions without too much drone. Problem is, nobody seems to sell non standard centre pipes. Might just have to get the welder out... Then again, I'm probably talking s
te!
(btw, apologies for the inevitable iPhone typos)

I had the standard exhaust on my T350 for 2 years and it was great but no pops and bangs at all! I then had a JP fitted 3 months ago and now it pops and bangs like hell. It is noticeably louder than standard but doesn't drone on the motorway.
I had an AC Schnitzer backbox on my BM 330ci and that was very drony but the JP doesn't seem to be.
My JP will be for sale next week (although it doesn't fit the Tam) as my car is currently with JP and they are fitting a new development exhaust with twin 3" pipes from the cat and then a completely new back box - can't wait to get it back and hear it.

There is a big difference between "pops and bangs" and having your engine "fire" on the over run.
All speed six's pop and bang as soon as you go from above 3K revs to below 3K revs - sounds good but no where near as good as to get it to fire.
I have found that you need the exhaust nice and warm, drive through 7,000 revs, change gear but when putting your foot on the clutch you need a bit on the gas as well then change up. When you perfect it you will get it to fire. You need decats so you shoudl be ok, takes some time to get it right but the noise is amazing and the first time I got it to happen it scared the s
t out of me - now I think it is great.

Quick question, does the mapping of the engine not have anything to do with the pops and bangs?
I found that straight after a service the car is much less likely to do this, however give it about 100 miles and she's back on form.
i guess it would as presumably the pops 'n bangs are to do with unburnt fuel, after a bit of a tune up i guess the engine is producing less 'wastage'?I found that straight after a service the car is much less likely to do this, however give it about 100 miles and she's back on form.
