Hi all,

Hoping for some advice with a couple of questions. Having previously owned a Griff and an Ultima I have convinced myself that to own another TVR it will need to be kept under lock and key in the garage to protect it from the crappy British weather.

I now find myself without a garage but craving a second car for the occasional drive to work and weekend use. Having looked at a selection of "normal" cars to fit the bill I've realised I need another tiv.

To this end any views on -

1. Practicality of not having a garage to keep her in?
2. Limited(ish) use and getting it to start without a battery conditioner?
3. Good S Yorks / W Yorks servicing/maintenance options?

Hoping to hear the answers my heart wants

Hi Richard. First point is ok if you get a very good cover (and a couple of those moisture absorbing pots you get in B&Q for lofts\caravans etc) but the second might prove to be a real hassle. My Tam seems more able to cope with lower charge than my Cerb, but over periods of more than a couple of weeks and when it's been freezing cold overnight it could be a non starter, which sort of renders it not very useful if you wanted to go for that dry winter days spin :-(. I think you really need a trickle charger.

I have now sold my Tamora but from my experience...

1/ Mine usually lived in the garage, in 3 years of ownership the only times the hundred amp fuse went was when it had been left out over night in torrential rain. I have never heard anyone else say this so maybe mine was just used to being indoors.

2/ Without a trickle charger the longest I think my battery lasted was 2 weeks, maybe three with fingers crossed and some light praying. One issue you may get is the brakes binding on if it was wet when you last drove it. If this happens and the battery is flat you won't be able to drive it or push it anywhere. Worst case scenario happened to me when I went on holiday for 3 weeks with the offside flush against the garage wall, no power to drive the car, no access to the battery, and the brakes bound on.

Do those solar chargers work? Maybe connected to a lead through the footwell?

3/ Pass. Isn't there Greensomething something up that way, or HHC?

My Tam lives outside on the drive at the side of my house - no problems at all. It does not leak (honest) & has never been damaged. I do have a cover but the reality is you can only use it when the car is clean otherwise it will scrath the paint where it rubs.

So long as you have a driveway not having a garage is not a problem for using a trickle charger (mine is hard wired in). Thats what extension leads are for!. Cold weather and little use will mean the battery suffers.

HHC are yorkshire based I think, good reports too from all accounts. Again many service garages offere a collection/delivery service at a modest cost. So should not be a barrier.

Thanks all ...

Access to power and a driveway sounds like it might just do the trick.

I can feel the purse strings loosening already!

I would be tempted to rent a garage if you don't have one. Well worth it.

Raceproved in S Yorks can maintain the car for you. they had a cerb S6 for sale that would maybe worth considering. Whilst cerbs CAN leak they are less likely to do so than a softop.
