been out today in some sunshine ,and can hardly see the numbers on the lcd screen ,

can the brightness be turned up ,and how.?

Yes, its in the set-up menu(#2). Look in your manual. You use the buttons on the steering wheel to navigate through to the correct menu. Contrast & brightness can be adjusted between 0-100% To be honest, it won't make that much difference in the sun, my Tam is very poor with the roof off and the sun shining on the LCD.
