Oil Recommendation?

Need to buy some oil to use for top-ups when/if required.

Graham's site says it's 5W-40, is any brand recommended other than fully-synth Shell or Carlube?

What's the difference between the 0W-40 and 5W-40?

I use mobil 15/50, car at 45k and doesn't burn a drop.

Shell Helix 10/40, I get good oil pressure and it never uses a drop of oil.
I've been told the 0/40 especially is way too thin for the S6.

high oil consumption, if oil is to thin it does not stay coated to the moving components when hot after switch off, the oil drains down so increasing wear on start up 15/50 semi synthetic is the one to use this especialy applies to S6 engine. as stated by TVRMARKUB.

I only ever used 0w/40, as recommended by Racing Green. Total of 67k so far and no problems due to wear.

It seems to me that the oil choice thing is a bit of a minefield and has many conflicting views. And to make it worse, all the rationales seem to make sense!

Maybe I'll change grade everytime I change the bloody oil!

I appreciate that's what the factory always recommended Jamie, but Jason now advises that 5W/40 gives best flow/protection compromise.
