Finally managed to get a long run in over to Harlech, so ran for about 3-4 hours. The oil temp struggled to 60 preferring to sit around 55/56. The forecasters lied and it was pretty wet the closer we were and the oil dropped to the late 30s. Is this just a quirk of the sensor?
The oil temp sensor sits at the bottom of the oil tank right in the flow of air/water so it would probably drop a bit (every winter there are threads about people's oil not reaching temperature in chilly weather), but this sounds too big a drop if you were still driving along.
If there's much water spray off the road it can cool the outside of the sensor even more which could explain it.
Just wrapping it in thin foam and a tie-wrap brings it's temp readings close to reality, a 5-minute job. It's low down on the side of the oil tank, if you didn't know.
Thanks guys. Looks like probably not to do with spray - down to 9 degrees this afternoon on return even though I ended up with sunburn! I'll tape it up and otherwise change it.
