When my gearbox was removed by a so called specialist 18months ago since then I have had a horrible vibration/rattle through the gearstick when hard accelerating I have not been able to solve this and neither could the so called specialist.

My engine & box have recently been out now when i change gear it sounds dry & squeaking. Where does the selector get it's lubrication from?
Any ideas what i could do as I have a 400 miles trip tomorrow and want to use the car.

Help please

Barry

The selector shafts are splash lubricated by the oil in the box.

Does the gearstick have any play in it? May be that the 'specialist' has not replaced the nylon bush that sits in the cup for the ball of the gearstick.

Which page is that detailed on?

Have you got a part number for said bush?

Item 15 of page 4-3 described as a damper sleeve. I'm afraid I don't have a part number but somebody like Competition Transmissions could probably tell you off the top of their head.
It's fairly easy to check for, remove the centre console section of trim, the rubber gaiter and undo the four bolts holding the gearlever in. This allows you to look at he top of the remote housing.
I know this as when I helped a mate with his Cerb gearbox the bush had dropped out and was jamming the selector!

Spoke to then he was not really up for supplying me a bush said he needed to hear it. Might be able to do that we will have to see.

Then this happened.

Houston we have a problem

Can't get any gears with engine running. I had a new clutch & slave less than 2k miles ago.
I bleedc the clutch with the RAC man and it worked but went again after less than a mile. I have ordred a new master clyinder as I hope it is air gettign in past the seals but the pedal does feel ok.

Any thoughts?

Ooh not good Barry!
Does the clutch come and go if you pump the pedal?
Very possibly is the master or slave cylinder, but another thing to check is the spigot bearing in the end of the crank. If this has been damaged it can cause weird clutch problems with it engaging/not engaging at random times.

Good luck getting it sorted.

Sodding spigot bearing has collapsed

I could cry

Still had the box out in an hour

At least it's a relatively cheap and easy fix.

Well after over 18months of driving me mad thanks must go to Gordon @ Str8six who had a suggestion yesterday.
When you remove the gear stick by removing the small grub screw and the base there should be a piece of rubber stopping the gear shaft retaining bolt head from touching the stub on the top of the gearbox.
Guess what it was not there.
So many thanks to the Proper Specialists that are Str8six thumbup

Had the same issue with a rattly and loose gearstick, especially in 3rd gear. Took the stick off and realised it was missing the rubber spacer so I used a tap washer I had lying around which fitted perfectly. Job done.
