Flip Sat Nav - which one?

I'm looking for a flip-out sat nav system for my T350. I'm fed up of the wires hanging down and it unsticking itself mid-journey.
I've used the search forum but most are about a year old now. So can anyone recommend any please?

The pioneer "AVIC" series appear to be pretty popular.
They are a modular system so you can also add things like bluetooth phone prep, reversing cameras etc.

I have just fitted the Pioneer Avic-X1BT they are old now but can be bought for around £500 new, considering it was £1400 a few years ago it's a good deal. the 2010 sat nav disc have just been released so they are still supporting it. Only problem with pop out head units is you have to have the gearstick in 2nd or 4th to allow it to pop out. Also it's a pain to fit if you do it yourself.

Had a Kenwood fitted to ours by Road Radio, very happy with it so far especially in France.

Thanks - Just checked them and they are out of stock I looked on Amazon and new one are £1,200 and second hand ones are £700

This may be a stupid question but can you play music while the sat nav is on?

On the Kenwood you can, it automatically cuts the music to allow sat nav to give you an instruction.

Does anyone know if this unit is compatible with the system already set up in the T350? I want to be able to virtually plug and play with minimal modification.

The Pioneer AVIC you can play a cd while using the sat nav. You have to plan your route and save it to the "Brain" then the CD/DVD is free to use as you wish. You can then set up how you want the instructions relayed to you, either left or right speaker or both

Also it is the same connectors so you just have to unplug the old one and plug the new one in. That's why I bought it. But it's not as simple as that for installing all equipment :-) To hide all the wires and do a good job you need to remove the lower dash, this makes it much easier. I put the hide away unit in the passenger foot well on the ledge of the backing trim using velcro. It took me a whole day to figure out how to do it. I looked at putting it in the boot under the seat and drivers footwell then realised the dash had to come off. You have to also tie into the speed pulse cable and hand brake cable (all wires and clips included) but you can just ground the handbrake cable (this lets you view a DVD while driving)

Edited to say you don't have to connect into the speed pulse cable it will work ok but you don't get the 3D readings (inlcine/decline) and you will loose your positioning while in tumnnels.

Forgot to say you should ring Autopart as I think they may have a display one that they might sell you if they arn't getting anymore in stock.

wow that does sound like quiet a bit of work - Might buy the unit and then get an audio place to fit it.

That X3 is only £100 dearer than the one you got so probably just end up getting that one then.

Exactly the same as the X1BT but without the bluetooth module and you get a 6 cd multichanger :-)

I'm not overally bothered about the 6 cd changer thingy, i'd rather have an iphone adaptor as most of my songs will be on that and if im in the car i'll have my phone with me.

My main priority is the flip sat navthough as im fed up with the portable one falling from the window screen, leaving marks on the screen and wires hanging down.

How much would an audio place charge to fit the unit. I was thinking maybe 3 hours work @ £25/30p/h?

Road Radio, was £40 and hour I think it took them around 4 hours, trickey job getting all the wires in a small place and behind the trim around the window I seem to recall.

If the bought the unit from them too, i would have thought they would have fitted it for free?

That Kenwood one seems quite expensive compared to the AVIC X3? Is there a big difference in quality?

No idea on the difference in quality, did manage to negotiate a deal, which included a couple of free bits, the biggest thing was that it runs on Garmin, which is easy/cheap to keep up to date, originally we looked at a Pioneer, but the update/subscription costs were very high.

I'm fairly inept mechanically but managed to get the AVIC-X1R into the T350. The head unit fits straight to the existing ISO. I then ran all the wires through the lower dash, then those that had to go to the hideaway box conveniently ran in a gutter in the floor under the mat (passenger side). The hideaway box is under the passenger seat - it does go in without taking the seat out if you're canny (and cover it in double sided tape!) I use the iPod adaptor which is secured to the underside of the glovebox. Earthed the handbrake cable, ignored the reversing lead and couldn't find the speed pulse easily so ignored that too. Took about 6hrs (with interruptions).

I did have the XlBT with all the trimmings - bluetooth, mic, remote, autochanger, reversing camera etc. There was barely enough room for all that in a Freelander; no way would I attempt it in the TVR. It can be done by a rank amateur but I would certainly apply a KISS policy and not aim for the whole shooting match.

You can sell the CD changer and get an iPod connection for about £60

It costs £0 to update the satnav due to the power of the internet
But around £120 from a Pioneer dealer fpr the full set of discs

Have been reading some reviews on the X1 and it seems that it doesnt have a great ipod interaction. As most of the music i'll listen too will be either radio or from the iphone i think i'll probably just pay the extra and go for the newer X3 instead.

Ipod intergration on the X1 is crap
