Running cold?

Set off today following the usual temperature/revs advice - 20 minutes later got to the M1, oil temperature was a nice 65, accelerated hard onto the motorway only to find that within a couple of miles it was down to 58/59 and remained around this figure for the next 25 miles (temperature actually varied between 55 and 61). I understand that cold air passing through the engine bay equals cooler running temperatures, but should the engine not have got to 60+ and remained there?

Normal mate. Mine sits at about that on M way etc unless you work the engine a little to get the temp up. In the winter it sometime struggles to stay above 40 on a long run.

It's the sensor that is cool, not the oil. You're bombing along at 3,000 to 4,000rpm with all that heat being generated, don't worry about it, so long as you've allowed everything to warm fully.

Has anyone ever fitted an oilstat to make them warm up quicker/ work more efficiently?/ with Cerberas people tend to cover up the radiator a little in the winter, I cant imagine cold running does it much good!

I'd be interested to know if it's normal to have an oil temp sensor in the oil reservoir? Seems a bit odd to me that you are measuring oil in a large tank that's (kind of) in the air flow...a better sensor position would be in the oil galeries of the block .. same as oil pressure..

Hot day in summer not moving much when it does that is the time to worry.
