Has this ever happened to anyone?
Is there any way of preventing against it or is it just a random component failure?

My Focus used to live on a diet of coil packs. That and headlamp bulbs

What exactly happens during this explosion? Bang, pop, fizzle? I'm guessing they get either a current overload and burn out, or internally fail in a similar way?

For me, it felt as if something 'gave' under acceleration. No bang as such but sounded like a bag of bones running on 4 cylinders immediately after.
It was a pretty 'obvious' event when it happened.

An update on the coil pack failure (for those who are interested):
It would appear that the ECU also sustained heavy thermal damage and is beyond repair.

Hopeful that a new ECU in addition to the replacement coil pack, HT leads (and 12k service, including shim adjustments, and MOT - also due!) should see the car back in action.
I have put my fingers in my ears where cost is concerned so far..
Doesn't rain but it pours I guess.yikes
Which is probably exactly what it will do the minute the car is returned...
