My car is going to be kept outside (no garage) and Im wondering if one of those plug in solar chargers would be of much benefit?
Anyone tried one?

Yes, I have.
No, not much use.

Best advice would be to get a battery conditioner/charger - accumate charger is a good one to use

I have a solar powered shed. Runs on a 12v battery charged by a 15w solar panel through a charge controller. I run the lights off it and have a 1000w 240v converter for power tools etc. I too am in the situation where the car is parked outside at the moment and so have connected it up to the solar system in place of the shed battery. All seems fine and the battery is always nicely topped up. I don't think the dash mounted ciggy lighter socket type things are any use but get yourself a decent sized panel (15w) upwards and you should be fine at least during the summer months. Be advised though, anything over ~ 10w and it's advisable to have a charge controller. During midday sun my system can push out 1 to 1.5 amps.
