The gearshift on my Vantage seems rather ponderous and imprecise is this a feature or can it be adjusted?

It can be adjusted. Bamford Rose thread - they have a different linkage kit...

What mileage is on the car? Your linkage may just need adjusting.

My Maser had its linkage replaced at about 60k miles, same transaxle layout, though the Aston system is superior.
