Sport Pack Wheels on Craigslist

Hi all,

I’ve been keeping my ear to the ground for a set of Sports Pack wheels for my V8VR and stumbled across these last week:

At £1150 with tyres, they did look too good to be true but inquired anyway. I just wanted to alert people that may indeed be the case.

Below is my email correspondence to date (read from bottom-up). Since asking for some relatively simple information, it’s all gone a bit quiet. As you can see, before this, bank transfer was requested prior to shipment etc etc. My suspicion is that their origin isn’t 100% above-board, or they simply don’t exist. The fact that they are on Craigslist (unprotected) and not eBay (protected payment) is further cause for concern.

I may well be wrong and there’s been a delay in him getting back to me, but these wheels come up quite rarely (with a few people in the market I believe) and I don’t want other PH’ers to fall into a POTENTIAL trap.

I’ll keep you posted.

Good to hear they come as set.

I do not think you are here to fraud me. But the reality is I do not know who you are (e.g. your full name), your line of business or the origin of the wheels. I just hope you understand I need to protect myself before I potentially transfer £1200 to a stranger.

Can you therefore please confirm:
- Company name
- Business address
- Origin of the wheels

Please also send a close-up image of each of the wheels and if you would accept payment via PayPal.

I am very keen to buy these wheels, and appreciate your cooperation.

Sounds good.

Can you confirm they are a set, i.e. 2 x 8.5x19 (front) and 2 x 9.5x19 (rear).

Some “sets” have been offered recently but they’re 4 x fronts!

What would be your preferred method of payment, and can you guarantee delivery if I pay 100% upfront?

The language is very much akin to most frauds. They assume your going to buy and go straight to talking about how you get them the money. Seen it time and time again. Asking for proof of id is like a crusifix to a vampire, they reply protesing about not being fraudsters. 99% sure its a fraud

My guess? Look at the poor grammer, he's no paddy. You will not get an address or id or be able to see goods or collect. Soon as you start pushing he will stop talking. I would report it to Craig's list as a possible scam. Buy you lunch if I'm wrong

100% Agree. Most of the time the dead giveaway is that someone with an Anglicised name, selling something in ££ Sterling or $$ or whatever, who is ostensibly in that country makes multiple basic grammatical errors or uses unusual words or turns of phrase.

Although, these days you never know...

They use the fact the people assume there is some kind of safety in a bank transfer. This is not the case. If you must take a risk, then use paypal. At least you'll get your money back if it goes belly up.

Thanks for the offer.

I am still getting radio silence from the seller as to their address, to ascertain if they are indeed in Belfast at all. I suspect they may have just picked an area in the UK (and therefore in GBP) that's far away enough from the majority of the population to make a physical inspection impossible.

If I hear back and they are, may take you up on your offer or indeed contact the local AM dealer.

That's the third set that seller has had for sale. Last lot went for £2,551.00 29 bids on the 29th April.

Auction says Virage and DBS. Would be interesting to see how they plan on mounting a 19" sport pack wheel over the huge carbon brakes.
