Vantage - tailgate release

Hi, I picked up my new (2006) Vantage a few days ago....can't stop grinning! There seems to be a problem with the tailgate release though; it works via the switch by the gearstick, but not via the remote or the button on the tailgate itself. Has anyone else had this problem - or can anyone suggest how I might fix it?

Early car, won't work off the fob without a software upgrade. Sounds like the release on the tailgate may have failed.

I have never figured out what the point of this release is anyway. Yes - it unlocks the boot but you still have to lift it up so you might as well use the button on the tailgate to do exactly that.

As per original post, the button on the tailgate isn't doing anything either! Just releases from the interior button. Nobody else had this, or is there any way of tracing the fault?

Sorry, then i misunderstood the post. It is an electronic release so it is probably fuse related. I had my lock relay changed under warranty as it opened from time to time mostly when you were strapped in and ready to go. So i would check the fuse box.

My boot release button (on the back) broke too. Slightly different symptoms to yours but a £150 microswitch replacement at the dealer solved the problem.

The small round boot release button on the tailgate has now gone from working intermittently (and more often when the tailgate was pushed downwards at the same time as pushing the button), to not working at all. So, no way of oepning the boot from the outside of the car - at the moment I have to use the release button located in the cabin, next to the gearstick.

So far I've taken off the interior panel and poked around, and tried a bit of WD40. I've also checked that the fuse in the passenger footwell is ok.

Can anyone suggest how I can narrow down which part has given up, or suggest which is most likely, so that I can replace it?

I had similar on my old roadster.
the "ball" is built in to the switch.
Try replacing it.

Ok, thanks - will see if that does the trick. Was it expensive? I assume my dealer will be able to find me the part number.

Mine was done under warranty but can't see it being too pricey

Also, does anyone know whether a 2006 car can be 'upgraded' (software or herdware) so that the tailgate release button on the key fob actually make the tailgate pop?

Just to clarify the boot release from the remote... there has always been a boot switch on the remote, up until the 06MY you pressed this to unlock the boot but it didn't unlatch/open the boot, you either had to press the boot button or used the release switch in the cabin.

From the 07MY onwards - the first press simply unlocks the boot as before, but the second now actually unlatches/opens the boot a small amount. So the remote fob boot switch doesn't actually "open" the boot lid until 07MY cars onward, which started production in autumn 2006.

I have heard a few people claim that this feature is available via a software update, but you would need to check with your friendly dealer to see if this is possible.

I think the whole tailgate switch assembly part number is 6G33-32A50-AA, but I'm not 100% sure.

Does the lock make any noise or attempt to open the boot at all?

Grant - thanks for the info. Would be useful to know if anyone else has managed to get a dealer to update the software on a 2006MY car so it unlatches on the key fob.

LOH - no noise at all. Th eonly way to open the tailgate is using the button by the gearstick (though this at least shows the catch isnt at fault). The tailgate button used to work intermittently, but now doesn't work at all.

Sounds like the microswitch to me! I had mine replaced for £153 at the dealer.

Hmm, I suppose there's no way for me to be sure - was going to do it myself, but perhaps will have to stick it into the main dealer instead.

Ours is a 56 car and the fob release button has always worked.
