Updating My Reg Plates - any advice?

After a chat with a good pal, comment was passed regarding the tatty look of my reg plates, especially the front stone-chipped one.

Had a look on Fancy Plates, quite impressed but no facility to alter the size of the front plate even slightly once I've input the reg.

Glad they do the DB9 size rear plate.....but how the heck is it affixed

If there is not screws then it will be double sided tape. We normally find that you can lift one edge and its just a 'gentle' brute force and ignorance application to get it off. The old residue can then be removed with glue remover or even wd40 to soften it.

Merci Seb - I see that site just does the rear plate, and tbh I've never bought anything on ebay so I don't have a sign on name.

I definitely want the GB logo, just in case I get off my lardy derriere one day and drive down to La Manga !!

Scottish flag on a car near Liverpool is a definite non-non

Cheers Tony - there are no screws, but I was unsure if there was an internal fixing.

Would be a disaster if I tried to lever it off and hit an unseen fastener

I got a 3/4 plate for the front, and (having just checked) they do the custom rear plate for a DB9. From the FAQ section:

"Do you offer custom shaped rear number plates?
Yes this is something we specalise in. Certain vehicles such as the Aston Martin DB9, Aston Martin Vanquish, Rover 75/MG ZT, Jaguar X and S Type, Jaguar XJ, Range Rover Sport etc have custom rounded and shaped rear number plates. The standard 520 x 111mm size will fit fine and the majority of customers are happy with this size but we offer all types of custom shaped rear plates for all these vehicles, so if you are looking for a more snug custom fit then please"

I did actually insert the word Jockman as a bottom text on the Fancy Plates but it just didn't look right

Thanks Adam - I now know where my neighbour Neil got his Vanquish plates !!!

A three-quarter plate will look too small on the front of a DB9 but it's the only site I've seen where you can get the Aston Martin Badge on the plate

Changed my plates this year. There were four vertical, double sided tape/pads on the rear plate.

I found warming the plate with a hair dryer first softened the tape, to get it off.

When fitting the new ones, careful with alignment on the rear plate though, double sided pads don’t like to let go again. Have some spares, just in case.

I have used heavy duty velcro on mine for the last 7/8 years
It makes it easier to adjust the position
They can easily be removed for cleaning
It also gets rid of ugly screw caps

What size 3/4 plate have you been using? Is 330 x 89 too small?

Can I also pass on a tip given to me by Mikey K, use boiling water or hot air to bend plate to profile of front bumper, otherwise after a few hours pads let go and ends spring out. Went through a couple of refits before getting this advice, now perfect.(Thanks Mike)

I don’t want to remove my plates for cleaning, as I’ll be reminded of what some kind soul used to remove the previous sticky pad residue.

I mean why use WD 40, when clearly a 4” bolster chisel is a lot faster, in fact an ideal tool for the job.

Shunt, I'm not using a 3/4 plate on the front as I think it looks a bit daft on the DB9 cross section which is substantially bigger than that on the Vantage.

What I was hoping to do was to keep to the 520mm standard width but reduce the 112mm height to, say, 100mm to reveal the lower grille entirely, without the plate looking daft

That's just plain stupidity Gibberish - some people will just cover up any old crap - such a shame.
