iPhone charging

Does anyone know if the cable has been updated yet? I refuse to believe that AM are still supplying kits that won't charge the last 2 generations of iPhone.

I have sent an email to HWM, but so far no response.

Don't know about the cable, but I'm pretty sure mine does charge whilst in the car

Hi I have a Vantage S and the iPhone does charge when connected

When I last visited and plugged my iPhone into the iPod connection into an 07 Vantage it played but did not charge. Apparently there are two options:

1. Remove the box in the centre console and put the new upgrade as Apple have changed the charging pins and therefore this box needs to be upgraded. I think the dealer mentioned £500.

2. There is apparently a £15 box which you cab get on ebay which you just attach to the cable and that charges the iPhone/iPod as well.

I'd be surprised if Astons didn't charge older iPhone/iPods with their original implementation so I would hazard a guess that this was caused by apple removing the 12V charge capabilities on the iPhone some time back. This 12V charging method was previously used by Firewire which Apple has since dropped (I think?), they have now accepted USB (and as such, a 5V charge line) as the defacto iPhone connection method .

I believe the 12V charge lines are now simply disconnected so do nothing to maintain some sort of backwards compatibility. However, at times, this can get quite dangerous as the 12V and 5V pins are physically very close to one another in the socket and some old worn docks/plugs can allow the 12V pins to connect to the 5V pins accidentally - overloading and frying the iPhone . This has been reported quite widely with older Bose sound docks - you can get self-fitted replacement boards that swap the old 12V charge circuitry for the 5V version, which I imagine is very similar to how the eBay boxes work.

James from Paralight fitted my iPod integration which charges and controls the iPod without issues - I found out (by mistake) at the weekend that I can change tracks using the dash skip buttons even in the iPhone UI mode

I'm using the Nicholas Mee supplied iPod kit in my Vanq and find it to be excellent and it charges all the generations of iPod i've thrown at it as well as my iPhone 4 and gf's 4S.

My 09 DB9 plays only so I bought the scosche adapter as recommended by young Shmee and it now also charges

Jockman, what iPhone are you using? When I read the blurb for the Scosche adapter, it seems to charge older iPhones from newer cars, rather than the other way round, which is what I need.

Bob it charged my old iPhone 4 and also my current iPhone 4S

Cool. One more question. I see there are 2 versions of it. One is squarish and the other is ridiculously long. Which one do you have? And can you fit the phone in the cubby hole when it's connected with the adapter?

Bob if my car wasn't 2000 miles away then I'd send you a picture but it looks about the size of an after eight mint but 3x the thickness.

I always have the wire sitting out of the cubby hole?? anyway with the lid down.

Yep, I've got a Scoshe too - the only downside is that my iPhone + the cable + the scoshe only barely fits in the armrest storage thing.

Mmm. That's what I thought. I think that will irritate me more than the phone not charging. I don't understand why every single other thing that I plug my iPhone into will charge it except the bloody Aston!

Also HWM haven't bothered to reply to my email. I don't know if that's typical for them or not. Disappointing. Surely an AM dealer can understand that time is at a premium for their clients and that emails are extremely convenient?

My can's from mid 2011 and the cable charges iPhone 4S and iPad 3.

I would certainly hope that a 2011 car charges the iPhone 4/4S. Question is, it it just the cable that changed from my 2009MY car? Or is it something more significant - which seems to be the case from what I am reading.

Bob I'm sure it's just the cable - something about our 09 ones not having enough pins in the head to offer a charging facility.

07 Vantages did not have iPod connectivity. You either have an aftermarket set up or you're in a different car
