Well I’ve been spreading the sarcasm on “the other” site. There is a big smell over there and on my analysis, the smell is a combination of stale p155 on the mouldy brogues and tweed jackets. I think there is a high probability that most of them drink flat, tasteless “real-ale” at The Olde Belle.
I doubt that they ever wonder why they are dying out, why the AMOC’s membership is growing smaller and older? – Cant bebecause buying a car is a problem, as they are probably more affordable than at any time in their 100 year history (AM history, not AMOC’s).
No, it’s the old self-defeatist mantra “It’s not a proper Aston” ringing out across the sites.
But let’s look at the Vanquish. Great name, last of the NP cars (but not as hand-built as the previous wide-body V8’s and DB’s). It was fast – when it could get up to top speed but had a crap gearbox. It had a tendency to throw belts off various parts and was – like most of the current fleet (bar the 1-77 and cy
net) designed by Ford. It probably has dated better with age than the Ferrari 575 to which it is often compared to but in its day, it was probably no match for the wonkey donkey. It was probably seen as so mediocre for the money that they had to re-invent the car with the “S” moniker to denote an enhancement to the original model that it should have been all along (a legacy we still share today, i.e. a DBS “S” = Vanquish. In many ways, it is also often claimed that the pipe-smoking and slippered DB9 “blew it away” in many top trumps card games.
I wish those people (whom oft talk of a singular “Vanqui” ) would just give it up and realise that AM in its current form is a reasonably performing business unit operating it a very difficult market segment at a very difficult time. They are making car’s now by appealing for the those who will maintain AM’s livelihood – namely successful people from the middle and far East. Those of us who are of Anglo Saxon stock from the Home counties and whom are considerably better-off than thou, have had our chance and we didn’t help that much. We should let AM go where it wants to for the sake of it’s own survival. We can participate or not. But I think a few of the old moaners here and over at AMOC need to give it up a little.
Finally, would I swap my V12V for a new Vanquish? Well to be honest, I’m thinking I would at least like to get in one, forget about the name on the boot (which is what I do with the V12V anyway) and give it a whizz to see what it can do (or more accurately what I’m prepared to do) before deciding one way or another.
Simples.
