Hi All, just interested in your views, I would be running the car for approx 4 years & putting about 60,000 on it in that time. I have a budget of £38k which I don't want to exceed, there are plenty of cars at this level. Have seen 2 cars that caught my eye:

2006 with 20,000 miles from Aston dealer
2008 with 45,000 from a general premium car dealer (full AM SH) (am assuming this will check out as being a good car)

I would like the cachet of the newer car, and prefer the newer seats, arm rest, iPod integration and 9% improved MPG (due to my milage). I also consider the higher milage car more likely to have had niggles sorted out & to not have the issues cars can develop through lack of use like dried out seals & suspension parts (from experience with another Marque)

If I keep them for say 60,000 miles I will be selling the 2006 one in 2016 at 10 years old with 80,000 miles on. And selling the 2008 one at 8 years old with 105,000 on. What are people's views with regards to resale, I know noone has a crystal ball. Both the milages are high, is there much difference between 80 & 105k ie their resale will be killed either way surely?

Any opinions welcomed

Can't really advise you on future values, but just to say I owned a Dec 2005 Coupe with only 29500 miles on it when I sold it in March 2012. I bought the car 14 months previously , serviced it and put new rear tyres on - the previous owner to me had only done 5500 miles in the car in just over 3 years - but had never had the car serviced !
Car ran faultlessly during my ownership , I sold it for a lot less than £38k.

I only sold it as it was replaced by an 08 plate Roadster with 49k on the clock. Car still under warranty , so I just renewed the warranty in June for another year.

Maybe look to buy privately , buy a car under warranty and just factor in the cost of renewing the warranty.

60,000 miles @ 20 mpg requires 3000 gallons
60,000 miles @ 22 mpg requires 2727 gallons (9% better fuel economuy)

Saving 273 gallons during your estimated mileage.

273 gallons = 1242.15 litres @ an average cost of £1.50 over the next few years is £1863.22

Therefore if the difference in the resale of the cars is less than £2 grand I would buy the 08 car and the benefit from the better spec. I doubt there will be much more than a grand in it in 3-4 years time, so the 08 is better value.

Just to add another consideration, the higher mileage car may need a new clutch now and another one during the next 60k. Lower mileage car may only need one. At £3k(ish) for a clutch change this is another expense to consider.

The 117k mileage car on Pistonheads made £23k at auction after having around £7k spent on it at my local AM dealer. Prices are for where the cr's now and who knows where they might be in a few years time.
