Just got round to using the USB slot in the car.

Unfortunately it just names the tracks 1,2,3,4,5 etc.....

Is there a way for it to show the names of tracks as the CD does ?

Or is this a USB stick issue ?

( I copied tracks on to the USB stick from iTunes - and the tracks show the names if played on a copied CD )

Strange, I have "normal" (is NOT iTunes!) mp3 files on USB and they play with track title, artist, etc dispplaued on the screen. Maybe it has to do with the iTunes conversion to USB?

I was pondering doing this i.e. leaving my USB drive in car save hooking phone up each time, but I figured it might give me same kind of problems as you are getting. Eventually as I have to have phone in car for tracker and I have a cradle now, its easy enough to hook up music. What I had decided on as a better solution to USB was to buy a iPod shuffle for circa £30 and this would manage music and be a lot easier to sync with any more music I buy. But did not go a head as iPhone solution works fine.

Itunes are not stored as MP3 format, which the media player understands. You need to convert the Itunes files in the data files to MP3 format, then save to the memory stick. Save music in folders instead of playlists and that should work.....

I had a shock-resistant 20Gb USB hard drive permanently in the car. Pick it up from PC World in clearance a few years ago! Although the car went last year, I still have the drive with the files on so I've just checked the format I had set up to see if that helps you.

The root of the drive contains a folder for each artist, with the folder name being the full name of the band. Within each folder are the individual MP3 files, each with names in the format <Track#> <Title>.mp3

So, for example.....

If I check the properties of the MP3, they are <Title>, <Artist>, <Album>

Now I might be wrong (it's been nearly 12 months since the car went, otherwise I'd test it!) but I seem to recall the car's display showing text as found in the folder name and MP3 file name. Try creating a folder on the USB stick with the artist name as the title, then copy an MP3 in to that folder and rename it to the name of the track.

As I suggested, buy a iPod shuffle or spend all weekend fannying around with your USB. I did think of a portable hard drive I have spare, but wondered if having it spinning away all time might run down battery.

For me, setting up the disk was a matter of copying my MP3s from the PC to the disk - nothing more complicated than that. I did have the advantage of only using MP3 though and have never used iTunes which probably made things easier since all my music was already in the right format.

Not sure I understand the battery bit - in mine, the drive went off when the car was turned off.

I've found that some USB sticks work and some dont and i cant figure out the reason why. There doesnt seem to be any obvious reason. Tried a portable hard disk as well and that wouldnt work at all, it just said unreadable disk on the display if i remember correctly.

My ipod classic works fine except it hangs the whole audio system if i try to scroll through tracks/artists too quickly. I have to scroll for a few seconds, let it catch up and then scroll some more. Pain in the backside if you are looking for something in the middle of the alphabet.

c997 - Any chance you could let me know the name or a link to a USB stick that you found works ok.

Interestingly i connected my iPhone also for the first time to the the iPod link in the car - some music tracks display information and others don't ? It doesn't seem like i had any way of accessing playlists either , i was only able to scroll through songs on my iPhone using the stereo dials on the car.

I would have thought you need to format the usb stick as Fat32 or Fat (via the computer). Right click it and select format - you will loose everything on it.

Second the track and artist data I assume is coming from the metadata on the file (this is a set of tags held against the file and can be seen if you right click the mp3 file and go into the properties and then the details tab. If oyu're not seeing the Artist/Track info in itunes You can also set these properties via itunes by selecting the track in question and using the get into potion to fill in the missing data.

USB stick is FAT formatted - i just checked.

Problem solved , apologies it was user error !

I ID tagged a couple of tracks to test in the car. Once i connected the USB in the car i then noticed under Menu there was now a USB section which i've never seen before. I just enabled Track information and VOILA !
