Thinking about a trip 'up north' next May.

Can anyone let me know the best roads for scenery, driving, and perhaps good overnight stops?

To the OP, how far north do you wish to go?
How long have you got in terms of days ?
How far do you wish to drive per day?

The vast majority of the roads north of Glasgow are just fabulous for spirited driving

Some roads are okay for driving however you are rewarded with amazing scenery as compensation

Gareth, thanks. that's just the sort of driving, but without the rain!

John, as far north as it's worth going.

We have done Glencoe, Diabaig, Ullapool, Gairloch, and loved the roads (and courtesy of other drivers on single track roads. We southerners could learn a lot!)

I'm going back "home" in Sept and have a different route which includes
A83 to Inverary down to Lochgilphead
A816 upto Oban
Some of the A85

BananaRob on this forum said the A819 down to Inverary from the A85 is very good and so is the A828 Oban up the coast to Fort William
I've also considered the A861 loop just West of Fort William that you access from the A830
You could also head over to Applecross, great views

A939 Ballater to Grantown on Spey. The road is epic, the scenery is not bad either!
