Had some idiot in a white van seemingly side swipe me when he was turning right this morning. I say seemingly, because the guy was really really close to me (he was moving slowly, waiting to turn right, I was at the back of a group of 3 cars, busy road with shops, not in a hurry, and he started to go as I was passing him going the other way) and as he went past I felt the car jolt and a loud bang. Clearly he had turned into me. Got out the car rather quickly (as you do when you're about to kill someone), he was stopped in the middle of the road, flat tyre and I was expecting to see my rear 3/4 in a mess. However, I had a slightly puzzling sight. No scratches, no dents, just basically a black wheel... No George, I haven't had my wheels painted.

Upon further inspection I had a little black on the front wheel too. Seems as he turned right, his front tyre must have clipped my front wheel, then as we past his tyre blew out. Hence why I have a rather black rubber coated rear wheel! Amazingly we past completely without any bodywork making contact at all and the jolt can only have been the air from his tyre as it let go.

We ended up parked about 40m apart, and when he said he didn't see me (!?) I pointed out I was in a red Aston Martin, in a queue of traffic, in broad daylight and his face dropped. "I saw it was a sports car..." Anyway, after exchanging details just incase, I just need to finish scrapping the rubber off my wheel!

Very very strange, but quite a relief! Oh the wheel cap came out, but I'll cope in the circumstances!

Moral of the story... nothing really, just wanted to share.

I would be inclined to have it inspected anyway, and the alignment checked.

That would've made me jump! Glad it's not done any real damage though.

I will get it checked out for sure, but the biggest sensation was the bang, and that seems explained by his tyre blowing. I keep going back out to check, but it's purely rubber that made contact and not the slightest bit of visible damage.

I'd be a bit concerned at the centre cap popping out..... As it could indicate that an undue force has been applied to the wheel where it fits onto the hub....

The upright holding the hub is only aluminium, and obviously contains the wheel bearing, and supports the disc....

I'd definitely be getting that checked out, sooner rather than later...

Also the wheel, you'd be surprised at how little sideways force is required to knock one out of shape...frown

like I said, will get it checked for sure, but where his tyre has blown rubber had actually been left on the wheel nuts, so it could well have actually made contact directly on the centre cap. I've been over to my local garage to have it all cleaned up, and there's not a mark on the wheel. They, and I couldn't really get our heads around how the rubber was so far in, yet there's zero visible damage, not a scratch on the wheel. We'll see, but it seems it's just the flailing bit of his tyre, so hopefully not too much force.

I agree, but I wonder how many PHers who were moaning about speed cameras on the way back from AMOC concours at Broughton House would also agree.

Can't have it both ways, we all drive too fast and too close at times and sometimes we're the other idiot.

(Sits back and waits to be flamed hehe)

I'm sure as an ex policeman you never drive too fast, right LBS? tongue out

Although your point is a valid one, I'm always speeding or occasionally answering my phone whilst driving, yet I still get pissed off by other road users (mainly cyclists punch ).

Come on Georgeous, read what I wrote - "WE all drive too fast...". I definitely include myself in that category. I often drive faster than the limit but I would hope I'm driving at an appropriate speed. If we start to discuss posted and appropriate speed limits however we could be here for ever.

Using the phone whilst driving is a definite nono though.

The point I was trying to make is that none of us are perfect (on the road and off) and before slagging off other drivers standards we should perhaps examine our own.

BTW - I wasn't a serving police officer but an Independant Collision Investigator qualified to Class 1.

yes

In fairness, before it became illegal, no one would bat an eyelid. Suddenly it becomes illegal and anyone who does it is worse than Hitler. I only do it in traffic. I would bet driving whilst smoking, or driving whilst needing a piss is more dangerous! smile

Be careful out there Georgeous, this type of thing can so easily happen.

Not good to see, could happen to anyone. It's not going to stop me biking though, it has it's dangers but what doesn't? I want to do track days more than road riding anyway smile

I concur! Certainly we all go over limits but like you I generally only will when and where appropriate. Certainly not one for ever using the phone while driving, car has BT so no need for it. I agree with the others, having a cig or rather lighting up hunched over the steering wheel like so many do has to be more dangerous frown

I am more concerned with people driving too fast for the conditions rather than speeding per se.

Driving at 70mph on a fog-ridden motorway is not technically speeding but can be excessive for the conditions smile

^ 100%, I see this all too often, even in horrendous rain, people still flying along at 80/90.

That horrible crash on the M4 last year was an awful reminder of what can happen frown
