this is a strange one you all of you in the know...

when i turn on the sat nav, it seems to be in a completely different location. when i have checked the set up menu I seem to have zero satellites coming through to the system...

From Service Bulitin

GPS Tuner may lose its last satellite position in the memory and on the next ignition cycle
the car may be in a different position according to the Satellite Navigation Display.
Engineering have therefore released new Software for the GPS Tuner to overcome this
issue.
Workshop Procedure
1. Fit vehicle protection.
2. Ensure AMDS has been updated with Major Update v2.00 and Intermediate
Update v2.01.
3. Connect AMDS to the vehicle.
4. Reflash the GPS Tuner.
5. Carry out a DTC Read and Clear.
6. Check the operation of the Satellite Navigation System.

^^Good info. All you need to do is pop out and spend £12k on AMDS and you'll be sorted. smile

Or maybe your GPS antenna is toast.

Again good point!
For those too cheap to go out and spend £12k on their own AMDS! smile
If its the GPS antenna
1. Fit Vehicle Protection.
2. Remove the following boot trim only; boot lid trim, right-hand-side boot trim and
rear backboard trim only.
3. Fit a new GPS Antenna (Part Number 1R12-37-10024) to GPS Antenna Mounting Bracket

Just happened to be Cataloguing service bulletins with description rather than file names like '298_1_sb0179' just now (slow day!)

Mine went crazy for a few days a while back then it fixed itself. If not do a full hard reset of the car by taking one of the battery terminals off?

mine would just zoom off and tell me i'm in the middle of a field . This happened after installing a new sat nav disc. A simple reset seems to have fixed it....

Does that work on all the cars? (including 06 DB9?)

If so, brilliant!

It's still better than the offering in the XF!

I beg to differ. XF sat nav is far easier to use. TMC Is handy and touch screen entry is far more logical and intuitive. Plus you can 3 routes and traffic bypass.

Yup.

Which version of nav do you have?

Post a pic if unsure?

The touch screen was improved after the autumn 2008 Denso software update, but I still found it overcomplicated and badly laid out. The real problem was poor route logic algorithms which were too biased towards taking the shortest distance even if this meant routing through a major city instead of remaining on the auto-route/autobahn bypassing said city. I had one of the first XF's and experienced this problem many times on the continent during the year I owned the car. Jaguar acknowledged the problem and used data I supplied to improve the algorithms. The satnav in my second 2009 XF was slightly better, but still had a tendency to divert off trunk (selected) routes if it thought it would save distance, so I never trusted it.

The navreq maps are generic and improving all the time. I'm using the 2012 iteration of the MMM2 maps. Seems to work well. For familiar routes setup a router race to teach the nav the preferred route.

On new routes I occasionally set waypoints on ring roads to avoid city centres

Just happened to be Cataloguing service bulletins with description rather than file names like '298_1_sb0179' just now (slow day!)
I had the 'wandering satnav' issue and noticed that there were often zero satellites available.
The maximum seen were 3 or sometimes 4.

I was going to order a new antenna from astonmartinbits for £30, but decided to check how easy it was to get to first.

All you need to do is take off the soft trim on the underside of the boot lid/hatch, as the antenna is on a short flylead and disconnects inside the lid. The antenna is mounted on a small plate, screwed to the hatch with 3 torx (I think) screws.

In the end, all I did was remove enough of the trim plugs from the top edge of the trim to be able to pull it away a bit and see the setup.
I disconnected and reconnected the plug a few times to clean the contacts and then replaced the trim.
I don't really see how an antenna could fail, but I can quite understand that the plug may have issues when mounted hard against a hatch that spends it's life being slammed shut...

I'm now seeing 7 satellites and the satnav is working fine!
