It's new Aston Martins that will get hit by a £23,050 tax this article says, but will it increase the value of second-hand Aston Martins?

Well that should nip JLR's astounding growth in the bud

The article says "under the proposed rules, which are being promoted by the Liberal Democrats."

So, I'd not let it bother you.

Ordinarily I'd agree with you but when they are in a coalition and their partners want something else, it's about what they get in return. And that means in the next government too.

In addition, I feel that the country has moved over to being anti success and anti wealth, such cars are wrongly associated to be the sole preserve of the very rich. Motorists are an easy target, larger, more expensive motor cars are an even easier target. Plus I suppose it's possible this is moving in the direction of some EU wish. Not saying it will happen, but it's very possible in the political circumstances that face us.

Why are the tree huggers so keen on polluting Diesel? They should be encouraging small super efficient turbo petrol engines being developed by Audi and BMW. France has replaced VED with a one off Registration Tax based on CV (horsepower) and an increase in fuel. duty. Eg 470hp DB9 = 476.71 CV. Surprisingly the tax varies from region to region. If you live in Nord Pas-de-Calais the first registration fee would set you back £17161.

a load of rubbish and unattainable......the wealth of the country if continullay hacked at by the lib dems who in my opinion are a 4th rate party who are only in power (so called) because the tories had no one else to turn to....all mouth and no bite....will leave the country , taking with them the expertise etc in their fields....mass unemployment would follow , the country would collapse....the only benefit would be the roads would be clearer.... wink

Why did the article use Aston Martin as the manufacturer likely to get the £23,000 tax? Are AMs worse than other high-performance cars?

I look at all new tax proposals in the same way some of the posters have but I know deep down, as I imagine many of you do, that most taxes have nothing to do with common sense, or raising money in direct relation to 'damage caused' by what is being taxed, or spending the resultant money raised in the area the tax has been raised from

In the current era, taxes are imposed on the basis of 'whatever we can get away with', using anything that is unpopular with the public at large as justification for an additional tax or a tax hike

The two most universally unpopular sectors in the current climate are people with a lot of money and things that are environmentally damaging. So to tax expensive high polluting cars is simply an easy target - no more, no less

If they really cared about the environment, they would not favour diesels and they certainly wouldn't favour electric only cars which may not pollute out of an exhaust pipe, but instead pollute with all the coal fired electricty used to recharge them and of course, the coal fired power used to make those awfully environmentally unfirendly huge batteries.

Plus at a time when cars are capable of running for much longer, why favour people selling/scrapping old cars and buying new ones which may again pollute less out of their exhaust, but require the use of old school power and other resources to make them, let alone the damage in scrapping the old ones - surely we'd be better off overall by encouraging people to run their cars for longer ?

As ever, it comes down to money, whatever the label used in justification

I'm currently faced with needing to hire around 20 technology consultants. Up to now all of my guys have been uk based. However, the government is chucking too much at me to make this worthwhile anymore (ni, pension, cost of fuel duty having a knock-on effect ok keeping staff on the road etc) and so I'm now looking at India and Bangladesh. This government will now lose 20xpaye+ni, plus the economic benefit of money that would have been earned and spent here. As much as I love this country and everything that I owe it (I'm an immigrant), i need to think about keeping my business afloat, the return on the blood, sweat and tears that I put into it and my family's financial security. This government is a mess, I wonder how many other companies are being driven out. There'll be nothing but dole scrounging chavs left before long.

As others have said this is a nonsense tax.

How many miles per year does any Aston do? Lets say on average 6,000. Lets take a rep mobile, insignia 2.0 diesel (ecotec) and compare, roughly (312g/k) a vantage would kick out 29,952kg for that mileage and the rep mobile (114g/k) 72,960kg.....

Got to love the libdems.... as has been said, popular things are taxing the rich/semi well off and pollutants.....

edit: Great point by Slarti as well!

IMO, apart from the eternal problem of worrying how the money is spent rather than how much is spent, it's the biggest problem we face politically/economically today

The fact is for the sitting government, which ever is in power, it is political suicide to lower taxes on 'the rich' in a climate like this. Someone earning say £75k p.a. or a firm making say £100k profit p.a. is lumped in the same boat by much of the public as someone earning millions or a huge international company - we are all 'tax dodgers, rich, take advantage living off everyone else, have an unfair proportion of the wealth, are worth fortunes, etc'

Meanwhile we continue to give an ever growing proportion of what we earn to subsidise an ever growing proportion of the country that are dependant on our subsidies. Something at some stage will have to give and it's already started to happen - it's no surprise tax revenues are down despite tax rates being up

Is that an annual tax rate or the initial registration tax?

Let's not all all spill our collective Horlicks.

It's not going to happen anytime soon and technology will move quicker than any legislation.

No technology needed - scrub VED and add a revenue neutral addition to fuel.

Very well put. The new pension arrangements are another cost to business. Cost to administer, cost to fund and a re hash of stakeholder pensions that cost government and business a small fortune and failed . Do they really think shop floor employees want to give up 3% of their current salaries ( that have already been eaten away by inflation ) for a pension that possibly wont pay out until they are well over 70 ? If Government wants more money in the pension pot be brave and put up NI. They know this would be a vote looser so spend fortunes of tax payers money introducing a new pension system to 'top up' the state system and employ that guy off Dragons Den to promote it with a massive PR campaign . What a waste of money. Going for a lie down I can feel my blood pressure rising !!

I beg to differ.....this country has some of the lowest costs in Europe to employ people.......as I write this post I am in Helsinki airport and the costs of employing people here in Finland would make your eyes water.......in France and Germany the "on" costs are about +70% to employ staff

Not the end.

At some point, the junior minister will be reminded that the list prce on all these higher polluting cars is 60-80k plus... and presumably the ave Aston list is 80 ish. Apply VAT @20% means the cars that pollute the most are, in the main, being taxed significantly higher than those that aren't.

Dubling up is just being greedy (ok trebling once you consider the 70% of the cost of fuel going to HMRC too).
