Removing door cappings

I would like to replace the mahogany door cappings in my DB9 with leather covered versions. I will do it myself if the complete door trim doesn't have to come off. The parts diagram does not tell the whole story and the workshop manual only describes door trim removal. Has anybody removed the cappings (9) in their DB9/DBS and if so was it a simple job?

They just pull off APPARENTLY!! I have never done it, but have asked and that's how it works. Tony Hall did his on his old Nine.thetees said:

The cappings are held on by about 6 screws which are accessible from the underside of the door trim.

I took mine off when I removed the door mirror to paint it. You have to remove the whole door panel. It isn't difficult there are a few screws all around the panel which you need to remove and a couple of bolts holding the door handle on. If it doesn't pull off fairly easily you haven't removed all the screws.

If you are willing to wait a few days (till next week), I can write up a procedure plus photos. I've been wanting to do this for a while, so maybe the time is right to put words to paper and include the photos that I took when I changed out my door caps.I will say that it isn't hard, but the biggest 'gulp' is when you must remove the chrome door trim and the workshop manual just tells you to pull it off with no further instruction.

That would be most helpful. My dealer ordered the leather door cappings 8 weeks ago to be fitted when the car is in for servicing next week. I have been told they won't be delivered in time, so I am thinking of doing the job myself.I will say that it isn't hard, but the biggest 'gulp' is when you must remove the chrome door trim and the workshop manual just tells you to pull it off with no further instruction.
It's not all that hard to do -- I've had mine off a couple of times to get rid of rattles.
The workshop manual shows all the fasteners. Windows fully down is best for what you're doing. The trickiest bits are detaching the door pull cables (take a picture or make notes before detaching), and the electrical switch connectors (I ended up on my back on the garage floor with a decent light to help). Then pull the whole door card away from the bottom & lift. It's very obvious from there.

It shouldn't be a problem at all. One thing...make sure you already have a set of pozidriv screwdrivers or bits. You will need them to remove the capping from the door panel. 99% of the people don't realize there is a difference between pozidriv and Phillips, and consequently they use a Phillips when trying to remove a pozidriv and then wonder why the screwdriver seems to cam out under applied torque.
You can remove a pozi with a Phillips, but it would be easier with the correct driver, and since the caps are attached with lots of pozi screws (x2) it would be best to use the correct driver to make things easier on yourself.

I've got damn rattles as well, not sure it's in the door, but am determined to get rid of the rattles. I took the SatNav out and the stereo won't work, so I am listening to every bang, click, whirl and tick that sounds
, so i'll get rid of them all one at a time.Volantedriver, would love a write up. I can take it apart myself, but why re-invent the wheel ?????

You should lift out the seats, they weight a tonne. I don't understand that everything was made of lightweight material, then they add some steel seats. When everything was taken out, there was no sound proofing, building a quasi DBR9 would look and sound great. Would take no more than a couple of hours to strip everything out, take it on a Track and fool some school children that its a DBR9, but without all the bits that make a DBR9 a DBR9. Wouldn't fool you guys for more than about 4 seconds, but anyone not knowing, would be fair game ......

IIRC they were torqx screws on mine (splined head) not pozidrive around the poor panel and Allen head on the pull handle. 897sma said:
