I've only been to the Monaco grand prix once, but I've been to plenty of others and picked up useful tips from them.Firstly, don't get cheap tickets! I've made that mistake before and you end up usually watching a boring bit of the circuit with no excitement whatsoever. Never ever go general admission! It's bloody awful, you can't move because someone will nick your spot and you have to get there really early to ensure you get a decent viewing point. With a grandstand you can turn up 5 mins before each race and have a great spot for viewing. When I went to Monaco I had a seat in the B stand (2 corners on from Rascas). Was a very good place to sit, although you didn't see the cars for that long. You're really close to the track though so the noise is immense!
Also, make sure there is a TV in front of your grandstand. You won't have a clue who's winning etc once they've all pitted otherwise!
If you want to view the circuit from other areas, support races are a great time to do so. Usually most people don't bother watching them (fool on them, they're usually better than the F1 race), so the grandstands are half empty. You can usually just go in some random grandstand during them which is good.
Pit walks are good to do if you can get on them, best time to try that would be the practice day as it's usually pretty quiet.

I've been for the past two years, staying in Nice both times.
The train to Monaco is the best option and they lay on extra services along the coast for the race weekend (Thurs, Sat, Sun). The queue at Nice in the morning can be daunting but moves quickly as the trains pull in. You will then have a walk to whichever Stand you go for from the station in Monaco.
It can be difficult to get around in Monaco as many of the staircases and elevators you'd normally use to get up and down are closed and this can mean long detours.
Both times I've been at the front of Tribune (Stand) B in Casino Square which has audible commentary in English, French, Italian & German and a big TV screen opposite which is essential really. There are loos, a sandwich/water/beer stand and a Haagen Dazs restaurant right next door and queues are not long.
The Automobile Club De Monaco http://www.acm.mc/home.php is the source of tickets, I think all others are resellers. Mine cost €500 each for race day but you're very close to the cars and the noise is astonishing.
You can get hospitality packages from people like Thomas Cook Sport but the price goes up accordingly. There are packages for the boats along the harbour but in my experience they're full of pissed idiots making a lot of noise in the hope people will look at them.
You'll struggle to go very far after the race as the police marshall everyone tightly and there will be a queue of at least an hour to get back to the station. Have a beer somewhere, pass some time and after an hour or so you can walk the circuit and watch the pit crews loading all the gear back onto their trucks which park on the main straight.
Roads re-open at 7pm I think.
There's no racing on Friday and I've heard that the evening can be jolly but very busy and I've not been.
