Mostly because I can't be bothered to search and not find the information anyway, I have white oxidisation appearing on the driivers mirror mount and I just want to patch it up for now and will take it to the local AM approved bodyshop after the Geneva trip for removal, stripping down and re-coating.

For now I will just rub down the offending area and paint. Is it Hammerite (semi gloss/matt/other) I need and a fine sandpaper? Or is some other paint better?

Did you just use a fine sand paper?

Not sure, I think either will paint pretty much anything. You'll need some fairly coarse paper to remove the flakey paint & powdery stuff, 120grit. Then a couple of coats of primer flatted down with 400g wet and dry and couple of coats of paint. If your paint is a little rough then polish smooth with 1200g wet & dry paper with soapy water. Much easier job if you can take it off first

Simon,

Can you let me know which paint you use and how you get on with this.
The paint on mine is starting to show slight signs of flaking. so looks like I will a summer job for me.
The black paint finish on the mirror brackets of my V8VR is not smooth, so I was planning to just strip off the loose paint
spray primer into a container and dab it on with a brush, after a couple of coats do the same thing with the black finish.

I guess the best way is indeed to get them off and painted, but is that any better since they were painted
that way at the factory and it still comes off.
I think the problem is the material they are made from (aluminium?)

Cheers
Alan

Will do. I'm just looking to patch them up as I'll probably get them properly powder re-coated after the Geneva trip. I was going to mask up the side of the car and the mirror itself, sand down the white patches, paint on primer, sand that down and then spray with the Plastikote satin black. My passenger door mirror is as new, it's just the driver's door mirror that is the problem and the warranty people will not pay for it to be replaced and only a give a token amount towards a re-coat.

What year is your car?
Mine is a Nov 2007, so are you saying AM will contribute to to a repaint?

Mine is March 2007 and under premium extended warranty. The warranty company refused to pay for repair or replacement. The dealer said they would stump up something towards a repair, mainly because they had already touched up the mirror mount when I collected the car a year ago.

Just had both of mine done, an 06 V8V. Dealer asked for a £250 contribution....not bad I suppose.

In that case you paid for one each unless you had new ones fitted. The approved AM bodyshop where the dealer would take my car to have the re-coating done wanted £280 for the complete job on one side.

So am I correct in saying that the 10 year anti corrosion warranty as detailed in my Vantage Owners Book is NOT worth the paper its printed on

Actually had forgotten, but I had some paint bubbling on rear arch done as well, all for the same contribution, so it was slightly better than I'd first portrayed.

The anti corrosion warranty is pants, though. It only covered corrosion that comes from within the body, ie from inside out. Poor paint prep and known issues take some real haggling.

The response I have had on this is that the corrosion is caused by a stone chipping the coating and then the aluminium oxidises. So not covered under warranty as it is caused by accidental damage.

I could go back to the dealer and get a contribution towards the re-coating cost but I think it may just be cheaper to go directly to the bodyshop.

Also not worth the hassle, mine took a couple of hours one weekend to remove and paint and cost about £15 all in.

You need to read it properly - it talks about corrosion and rust. Rust only occurs on steel. No steel on the bodywork! They warranty only covers for corrosion from the inside out. Chipped paint causing corrosion not covered. All the 'corrosion' on the cars are actually paint defects - typically cars not cleaned before applying paint. Factory may offer to make a contribution (not in my case - and I am not bitter whistle )but you can get it done cheaper without factory involvement.

I shall have at it at the weekend with sandpaper, primer and satin black paint after masking up the whole car as I can't be bothered to remove the bracket as it is only a small patch that is white. If I nouse it up then I can get it done professionally for around £250.

I had the choice when I bought my 2007 V8V last year of leaving the mirror mounts alone, having them touched up, having them stripped and resprayed or replaced (in ascending cost order.) I went for the strip and respray and think that it was a good option. The dealer reckoned it looked as good as the replacement part and would possibly last longer. Not sure of the price as it was part of my snag list for purchasing/negotiating.

You are correct that I did not read the full details of the 10 year corrosion warrant, mainly because I couldn't be arsed wasting my time.
The paint on my mirror housing is flaking, now these are lucky to be 15 mm wide, so the excuse it was a stone chip is just plain "smoke and mirrors" from dealers & Aston.
The bonnet on my car is perfect apart from one tiny stone chip after 14,000 miles and if you consider the surface area of an Aston bonnet compared to the width of a slim mirror.
I had a paint bubble fixed at the drivers door handle (highly unlikely to be a stone chip) and this is even mentioned in Grants book as a very common area for this.
The dealer I bought this off fixed it before I took delivery, so no cost to me, but even after owning an Aston since only Nov 2012 it does get a bit tiresome hearing rubbish like
"they all do that Sir" or "no it is not covered under warranty, because it is not corrosion"
Rant over.........bye
