Hi All,

Obviously Aston Martin's are covered by the eurowatch tracker system. Previously this system needed tracker tags or your mobile phone to be linked to the system, I was told today that this is no longer the case and that new cars do not come with tags or a need to pair the alarm to a mobile phone. The tracker will work without them. i.e. you still pay a yearly subscription.

Can anyone confirm this? and if so is the system still a thatcham cat 5 system or am I totally confused?

thanks for any help.

Not sure how that would work as the idea of the Tracker system is that you are identified as the permitted driver of the car by virtue of having something that the car system identifies when you enter the car and turn on the ignition. How would you be identified in the case of the tag or phone not being required?

No idea. That said the RRS is tracked and that doesn't have tags either.

Thanks for coming back

Not necessarily. Trackers can be activated by the owner reporting it to the tracker company or when something unusual happens with the car eg it is jolted or moved while the alarm is armed.

There are two types of tracker - one without tags, this requires you to call and report the car as stolen, hence a passive system. The ones with tags is an active system whereby if the car moves without your tag then they assume it may be stolen and hence they call you and no need to report the car to them as stolen.

The tags option paired to a phone I find will about 1 in 10 times fail to connect and hence I get a call from Eurowatch (happened this morning)

Thanks all. I now have greater understanding.

Can an alarm system be a thatcham cat 5 alarm and not have tags ie be a system where the owner has to call
to tell the tracking company that the car has been stolen?

Note I was also told by a dealer this morning that despite having no tags if the tracking company saw the car moving at 2 in the morning ie outside the norm then I would receive a security call anyway.

Thoughts?

I collected my car in November 2012 and I have tags on mine. My old 9 didn't have tags and I understand that was the option of the previous owner. Set up that way Eurowatch would only know car had been stolen if you told them that was the case. The tags/paring with phone give you added protection.

Our RRS has a tracker on which works without tags but does seem to be a proactive system as we quite often get calls from the monitoring station asking for the status of the car. Gets even more false alarms than the Aston smile

This has been an option since 2009 models I think.

Some Dealer cars have them, some dont. You specifiy your own new vehicle, you can specifiy without.

Both my 2009 4.7 and 2010 6.0 did not have tags.

Does this still constitute Thatcham 5, Guy, with or without.

Some insurers require an answer to this question smile

Doesn't Thatcham relate to the alarm/immobiliser rather than the tracking system. Most insurers require additional comfort of a tracker when car is over a certain value or a high risk model.

Rarely anymore due to difficulty stealing without keys.

You have the option of having the tags facility turned on or off. I was offered this when I bought my V8VR new in April last year. I decided to have the system activated via my phone, but there didn't seem to be a problem if I had wanted it off. The insurance Co. have not queried this at all.

Anyone know anything about the tracker advertised in the press which claims to work anywhere...even in a steel container! What about the Faraday cage effect ??

Interesting view - so why do I have to have a tracker on my Aston and RRS but not on my Merc which is only worth £20k?

thanks for the information all. Looks like there is no clear answer so far. I have heard from the dealer tonight that no new Aston's have come with tags for 18 months. That said I am aware of another new car owner who has tags!

At the end of the day I am not fussed one way or another. Happy not to have tags or a paired phone providing that the alarm system as a whole is classes at cat 5 to be in line with my insurance.

Going to call the broker tomorrow. but just found this page which, if I am reading it right, shows that the landrover system which has no tags is cat 5. It also shows that the Aston martin system is cat 5 as well. Perhaps tags doesn't matter at all.

When I renewed this year it seemed apparent to me that there is a fairly consistent value over which most companies want a tracker installed (or rather activated). I'm not inclined to post my findings though. Once you're through this threshold it's potentially cheaper to have it switched off, obvious risks aside as eurowatch charge a fortune if you add up over a few years

Really do not understand that Simon because my V12VR was new last November and is a MY2013 car and it came with tags confused
