Connected via the iPod socket or via the USB? My 5 works fine in my 07 car, albeit with TWO interfaces - one for power and the other to convert to the old connector to the new.

Has to be via the phone/iPod connector.

Via the usb as the 5 has a different connector to the other Apple products unless i pay £25 for a adaptor.

You need to pay your £25 I'm afraid.

I've used an adaptor on the existing iPhone 4 cable, but couldn't get the iTunes function to work. The phone book was active/visible, but no music.

Phone book is done via Bluetooth, not the cable, so probably your adaptor doesn't work.

I have two (like others) a "scosche" PassPort (spelling might not be right) to convert the power, and an Apple dock to new-thing converter. Together they work fine.
