Gearbox maintenance
Discussion
Have spoken to Aston Derby today and they have told me the DB7 V12 Manual gearbox is a sealed unit and the oil in there is for the life of the gearbox.....this sounds strange to me as oil degrades and can collect moisture thus preventing it lubricating properly, can anyone confirm this?
Sealed for life does not normally work. Not certain about DB7, and can only talk for DB9, my manual states sealed for life for Gearbox (auto) and diff. Aston have since changed their minds, and they have stated that it should be changed every 2 years. BUT, according who you talk to, it is every 40000 miles, so really when one Franchice tell you one thing and someone else something else, you need to make your own mind up.
Oil does degrade. Personally, and I mean for ME, I would change the gear oil every 2 years, my diff oil every 1 year minimum. I have burnt the diff oil myself within my own ownership, the gear (auto) oil was not so burnt.
I doubt very much if there is no drain plug or filler plug in the DB7 gear box, there are always accidents or leaks, and so there should be a way of filling.
I'm assumming you will be doing the work yourself, does the DB7 Manual have an oil cooler? If so you may need to disconnect this to drain out all the oil. Or you can drain the oil, change it, drive it and drain and change again. This will not get all the oil out, but will get most of it out. But does it have a oil cooler?

My GT has a cooler for the manual box.
In fact is has a cooler for everything
When I repaired my rad I obviously lost some gearbox fluid and refilled via the top union on the rad after refitting..
I collected the run-off whilst the rad was off the car so knew how much had come out.
Unsure if there is a standard point for filling, usually a plug on the side at least.
