Man Maths - Your chance to bare all.
Discussion
Having read the slightly off topic thread for the NoTM award, it got me thinking. I bet loads of us on here have applied some pretty bizarre logic in order to justify the purchase of our P&J's or maybe, an upgrade or accessory.
To get things going, I recently went in to buy a set of sport pack wheels for a car that I loved and came out with a brand new V12 Vantage. Perfectly understandable.
So post up your thought processes and impulsive, but perfectly reasonable, purchases here and let's see if we can unravel the secrets of the man maths calculator............

My man maths was strong but the power of my wife's lady maths was more powerful. The force was strong within her and she said I was weak, old man!
So I don't have a Morning Frost V12V with Bose sound, lightweight seats, carbon side strakes and black grille
Not that I am dwelling on it of course

I managed to justify the upgrade of a tuned audi RS6 to a Vantage as a daily driver, as the running costs on the Vantage were nearly 1/2 the cost of the RS6 (!) as a daily driver ....
the RS6 just ate dics, pads, tyres, shocks seemingly once per year and the Vantage has been positively economical in comparison

A couple of months ago I have had clear lights put on my car and the “bank manager” said that would be ok, she must have had a good day.
I then attempted to pass a set of sports pack wheels past her. To my surprise she said ok, order them, I thought that I was in another dimension where they had replaced my good lady wife with someone else.
Well the final part of the jigsaw was I need to get some work done to the front of the car and the underside sills due to stone chips. So I broached the subject about the sills and said it needed doing and these things cannot be left to fester and need to be protected, so it also needed some clear armour guard coating on it too. I couldn’t believe her response, “well it makes sense” jaw drops and “can you please repeat that for me darling” I heard myself say.
I have been saying things along the lines of if this gets done or that gets done, then it will enhance its value and also its saleability too. Yeah right saleability, sounds like sell to me………..NOT! I’m just going to let her think that I will sell my beautiful car at some point and buy a Fiesta and put the remainder of the money in the bank to earn 1.7%, yeah right
never going to happen.
Not exactly man maths, but I chanced may arm, didn’t get it bitten off and by the end of July, I’ll have all the extras I wanted on my car. (Clear lights, N400 sills and sports pack wheels)

I saw Top Gear endings the first time round. The car was so beautiful, coupled with the noise, the music and the filming, the faded Le Mans photos etc it made me cry.
forgot about it for several years. Was in a hotel one night surfing PH as you do, saw a V12 and thought its now or never. Phoned the dealer the next day, did a deal and picked it up two days later.
Man maths? Simple, can't really, afford it or justify it but, you're a long time dead.....

Many years ago while studying part time at University I went to buy a book which was one of the those recommended for the course. The book shop didin't have it in stock so called into the Vauxhall garage on the way home and bought a new Frontera, I just had to buy something that day. Later thinking why did I do that I never go off road I drove the Frontera to Africa across the Atlas mountains and onto the Sahara desert.
More recently my father bought himself a Honda Jazz and was after so car mats, I thought i'd treat him, so went to the dealer to buy some, they hadn't any in stock so I came away with a Civic Type R for myself instead. (got his mats thrown in for free as part of the deal).
Not sure if that helps with the research, or just confirms the theory that when it comes to buying cars, men are very impulsive....

The amount I lost in my equity holding tanking in 2008 dwarfed any depreciation so since then I argue it's a sound financial investment to protect against future drops...
I do view my Aston as a savings device though, it needs maintenance / insurance / etc but given interest rates are so low I would rather have something fun and liquidate it if I need to.

An excellent example of Man Maths, but don't give up with equities though.2008 (or if you have a crystal ball that works, March 2009) was a great time to have bought more, not be selling. With time and patience, it is possible that dividends can pay for an Aston Martin.
Mr. Buffett knows how and reveals as follows;
- - - "Most people get interested in stocks when everyone else is. The time to get interested, is when no one else is. You can’t buy what is popular and do well."
- - - "In the 20th century, the United States endured two world wars and other traumatic and expensive military conflicts; the Depression; a dozen or so recessions and financial panics; oil shocks; a flu epidemic; and the resignation of a disgraced president. Yet the Dow rose from 66 to 11,497. How could anyone possibly lose? By dancing in and out, that's how."
- - - "Investors making purchases in an overheated market need to recognize, that it may often take an extended period for the value of even an outstanding company, to catch up with the price they paid."
- - - "If you are not willing to own a stock for 10 years, do not even think about owning it for 10 minutes."

Went in looking for a used Vantage, while we were in looked at a beautiful brand new Lightning Silver fully loaded V8, salesman asked me what I would pay for it so i named a daft price, which he laughed at.
Week or so later he phoned me to say I could have it at that price if I could complete by the end of the month. Its on my drive now.
So the man maths part was negated by my wife perceiving we had got a "bargain". Pyschology eh?
