V12 Engine Variations
Discussion
I was talking to a friend at the weekend who has a DB9, i think he said his V12 produces about 480BHP, my V12V produces 510BHP and apparently the new Vanquish produces 565BHP...
So my question is, are we all using essentially the same engines that have just been remapped differently, or are there other things going on in terms of uprated parts etc?
Presumably, if it's the same engine and if you felt the need to, you could adjust a DB9 up >480BHP and potentially give the V12V a boost too? (i don't intend to, 510 is plenty, but just interested).

There are essentially 2 generations of V12 engine post-DB7/VanquishSo my question is, are we all using essentially the same engines that have just been remapped differently, or are there other things going on in terms of uprated parts etc?

The first started in the DB9 with 450bhp, then went up to 470bhp post one of the facelifts. Virage used a 490bhp version of the same engine & DBS 510bhp, the same engine as the V12V. There are differences in the inlet manifold and one or two other bits but they are essentially the same engine. Original rapide used the same engine too, with 470bhp (essentially the same engine as the later DB9)
I'm not sure how these engines relate to DB7 and Vanquish gen I
The second iteration of these latest V12s was introduced in the vanquish mkII producing 565bhp, with one of the big changes being knock control and the ability to take advantage of higher octane fuel. The 'new' (recently introduced) DB9 has a 510 bhp version of this engine whilst the rapide S has the same engine with 550bhp
Don't get confused by the 'new' DB9 having the same power output (510bhp) as the old DBS/V12V - new DB9 has more torque than DBS as it has the later 'vanquish engine'
Am sure BR, mikey, yeti and one or two others can elaborate a little more
There is indeed a lot more involved than re-mapping. In fact from what I have read on the BR thread, re-mapping has very little to do with it. Inlet manifolds, exhaust manifolds, machined heads etc, have been used to give the engines specific characteristics for the cars they have been tuned for.

Matt MTFU, 510bhp is never enough
There is plenty of info on the BR thread regarding power upgrades, but essentially the DB9, DBS & V12V are the same block with different heads (gas flowed in DBS & V12V) / cams / inlet manifolds. I believe the exhaust manifolds are similar across the range.
The new generation DB9.2 & Vanquish have Variable valve timing & knock control to get the extra ponies and the DB9.2 can easily be re-mapped to 565bhp

As said Dr Mike from BR developed these engines, so he may know a thing or 2

haha! forget where i am sometimes, this is the AM forum, of course 510bhp is not enough, what was i thinking!

Very interesting info, cheers guys...

Yeah, if it takes more than 1k miles to destroy your tyres, you need more engine
Engine size/power has nothing to do with torching tyres. Just follow Cockers for a stint on a run out.......that'll do it.

bloody lightweight, we were not going that quick
Although I did find it strange that we overtook that low flying jet
