We're planning a wee jaunt down to France for a few weeks in July and was after some advice on what sort of breakdown cover to take out. I would like to know who you've used in the past and I have a question. Obviously with a more mainstream car if something goes pop they take it to a local garage to repair. I don't think I'd want them to that with my 7. Basically if anything major did go wrong I think I'd just want the car taken back to the UK to BR and be provided with a hire car to continue the trip. Is there anyone who provides that sort of cover?

Pretty sure the RAC Euro cover does that. Mine does, the Marcos clutch went pop and was bled in a field at Spa. Had to explain a Marcos was like a cross between a TVR and Margan or they wouldn't come!

Never had to test it with the Aston scratchchin

I took out RAC cover for the weekend and they offer levels of cover including re-patriation of the vehicle and a hire car for onward travel.

If you are going on the Train, check their cover as it is well priced also wink

A word of caution Chris.

I would want to know exactly how they will repatriate the car if it can't be repaired. A lot of the European countries will wait until they have a transporter full of 8 or 10 cars and then bring them all back at the same time with the lack of associated care taken. frown

I've bought AA coverage in the past, but never had to use it. Generally they take good care of nice cars but I have no idea who they'd subcontract to in Europe.

I've heard that ADAC's service and pricing is better than the major UK companies, but last time I looked the site was in German, and you had to call to buy the coverage, so I went with the easy option.

Thanks for the replies.

I've spoken to AA and RAC and they both seem to offer the same thing. They'll try a roadside repair, and if thats not possible will arrange recovery to a garage of their choice. They only take the car home if they deem it beyond repair.

I'd be ok with this if a repair wasn't too big a job, but I wouldn't really want French Kwik Fit to be attempting any major surgery. Basically, if anything big did go wrong I'd want it towed home to a trusted garage. Is anybody aware of someone a little more specialist who might be able to provide the cover I'm after?

The AA and RAC rarely attempt a roadside repair, they more usually get a low loader out and take your car to a garage. In the two instances where this has happened to me they have asked where I wanted it taken and have not imposed a particular garage on me (UK only). If you are abroad I guess they don't want to drive it back to the UK on a low loader so will drop it at the nearest garage and then pass on any responsibility.

What do think will dictate "their choice" sure as hell it won't be having AMDS facility and the knowledge of Astons
I wonder who Locktons use as the preferred AMOC insurer?

Be very aware that the RAC cover will NOT COVER A DB7! its too old.... It wont even cover my DB9...

The RAC are happy to take your money and I almost made this mistake last year.....

Read the small print the RAC do not cover cars over 6 year old, the AA do smile

I'd certainly call AM Assistance first. They should know how to deal with an Aston.

I called my local Aston dealer to see if they could help, but no dice. Aston Martin Emergency Assistance is only available for cars under warranty. They suggested Green Flag, but they just seem to offer the same deal as AA and RAC. I have an AA membership so I guess I'll just go with them and cross my fingers!

If you are thinking of the AA and going via the Channel Tunnel, use their insurance. they buy it from the AA but sell it cheaper than the AA - even to UK AA members. Their are two options, one with higher level of cover - but still cheaper than AA
