V8V S GEARBOX LET GO
Discussion
Having really enjoyed my first year of ownership with the Aston marque, covering 6000 faultless miles, today, whilst creeping towards a roundabout the sign 'gearbox fault' flashed up and the car stalled and came to a halt in the middle of the road causing chaos- was doing no more than 5 mph . Couldn't even get the car into neutral,it was completely locked !
Got out of the car to find the gearbox oil dumped all over the ground, very disappointing to say the least.
Anybody come across this before ? My car is a 2012 V8 S, with the new 7 speed sportshift (now noshift whatsoever)
Obviously now recovered and will be taken to dealership on Monday...

Yes it has just been serviced...what are your thoughts ?
immediate thoughts are that you have been unlucky...Appreciate that you are a little frustrated and disappointed but what kind of response are you looking for with that question?
Things happen to all things mechanical. What matters is how it is dealt with over the next few days.

I cannot believe that the gearbox has failed. I am sure the fact that it switched itself into a mode where it could not damage itself will mean that there will not be any long term harm.
If it is as a result of the service that you have just had I would be prepared to to take the situation all the way. Thank God that you wherein traffic , at speed the consequences could have been disastrous .
Please keep us informed, we wish you well.

With a bit of luck that's all it is, makes sense that it is just a hose as all the gearbox/hydraulic fluid emptied itself out all over the road, and maybe the gearbox went into some sort of preventative damage mode.
Too many events coming up to be without the car, will keep you posted.

Mine is ASM1 (I think - MY2008).
Did exactly the same.
It was the equivalent of the slave cylinder, whatever it may be called which I understand is a part that is replaced as a matter of routine when the clutch is done that basically fell to bits.
The clutch had been changed about 900 miles prior to this.
AM replaced the broken part plus fitted a new friction plate as it would have been contaminated by hydraulic fluid.
AM also stated "never seen that before".
Now, in your case, they have

Join the club. After the dealer replaced the clutch and returned the car to me I hadn't made it 10 miles when the car came to a grinding halt because that brand new cylinder was leaking. Supposedly "that happens even with brand new ones". Of course, you think Aston would actually test the parts and the mechanics would double check them after installing them if "that happens".
On the bright side, they didn't say "they've never seen that before".

That is alarming. What if you had been doing 120 on an 'Autobahn'? Or even 70 on the M25 in heavy traffic.Don't think that is the same. If the clutch cable goes, you are stuck in gear. I had a throttle cable go on an E46 BMW (they later changed to an electrical connection) in a motorway in heavy traffic and basically coasted to a crawl with HGV's flying past on both sides. Fortunately one of them saw the hazard warning lights, realised that I could just stop in the middle lane, took pity, and let me cross onto the hard shoulder.
It was a scary experience and I fixed the problem but sold the car almost immediately.
Rick said 'stalled and came to a halt'. On a motorway that sort of thing stands a good chance of being fatal.

That's exactly what I was saying - re-read the opening post "whilst creeping towards a roundabout the sign 'gearbox fault' flashed up and the car stalled and came to a halt in the middle of the road causing chaos- was doing no more than 5 mph" It was a scary experience and I fixed the problem but sold the car almost immediately.

I'd guess your BM stalled when you stopped on the hard shoulder unless you managed to knock it into neutral - when these decide the gearbox isn't working there's no lever to nudge it into neutral!
Well for the people who were intrigued as to what caused our SS2 gearbox to seize and dump all the hydraulic fluid in the road, it was just a 90p circlip that broke on the high pressure pump attached to the gearbox. The technicians at the dealership had never seen this happen before and could give no explanation as to what caused it to snap.
Circlip was replaced and luckily no damaged was caused internally to the gearbox and now drives perfect.
Happy days

Good news and thanks for the post. Nice to know that the issue was not serious.Circlip was replaced and luckily no damaged was caused internally to the gearbox and now drives perfect.
